Presidential Satire


"Nixon in Heaven"

Shearer's Nixon runs across the history of Le Show, from cameo calls to "The Lakers Line" and to Casey Kasem to promote Nixon's new book, a reputation-rehabilitation effort, in 1988 to "Nixon in Heaven," a recurring Le Show segment in which the disgraced president77 and his still-loyal sidekick Haldeman, are, in the afterlife, still taping.

"Are you obsessed with Nixon?" Marc Maron asked Shearer in a 2015 interview, soon after the U.S. debut of Shearer's six-episode television series, Nixon’s the One.78 "Fascinated," Shearer replied. "I wouldn't say obsessed. You know, I don't dream about him."79 Shearer might well be obsessed with telephony, however, given how regularly it and devices for recording it are featured in Le Show sketches.

"I grew up in Los Angeles, under the persistent blaze of the California sun and, just as persistent, the dark shadow of Richard Nixon," Shearer explained in a video describing the making of his television mini-series Nixon’s the One. "As my life went on, Nixon seemed always to be in it."80

The first "Nixon in Heaven" aired two and one-half years after Nixon's death in 1994.

The Reagans: "Hellcats of the White House"

Generic models for Shearer's "Hellcats of the White House" include dramas from radio's Golden Era and the only film in which Ronald and Nancy Reagan (née Davis) appeared together, the 1957 Hellcats of the Navy (Columbia Pictures). The film, Reagan's next-to-last theatrical feature, was deemed by London's Monthly Film Bulletin "a vague and aimless film."81

Exaggerated sound effects — doors opening and closing, footsteps, Nancy Reagan's personal grooming devices — and Shearer's impersonations of characters from the Reagans, to David Brinkley and Tom Brokaw, and several members of the Reagan administration — invite listeners to imagine the private lives of the President and First Lady.

Majestic music redolent of a big screen western opens the segment, and Shearer, in the voice of a WWII-era newsreel announcer, proclaims, "From the late Holmes Tuttle collection, the West's leading active archive of historic storylines, come tales of action, romance, and adventure in our nation's executive mansion. Hellcats of the White House!"82

As Rick Kogan noted in the Chicago Tribune, "To deal with the Reagan administration in a continuing fashion [Shearer] created a Le Show segment called 'Hellcats of the White House,' which takes the previous week's news and neatly, devilishly twists it."83

The setup for a 1987 episode of "Hellcats" uses as its point of departure news of the Reagans preparing to move into their post-White House home in California:84

Our story opens as the President and First Lady spend their first weekend at their future retirement residence at 666 Saint Cloud Drive in Bel Air, in the spacious residence whose address has been changed to 668 to avoid satanic implications. The President is on the phone on the ground floor. Then, in the adjacent grand bathroom, Nancy stares into the mirror wielding an electric nose hair trimmer….

"Hellcats" episodes often end with a reference to the bedroom ("Ronnie, we need to think seriously about Don's successor. Why don't we go upstairs, and I'll help you think about it." "You know I've never been able to resist an offer like that, you little spitfire. The last one in bed has to watch the news") and a forecast of the next episode, again in Shearer's newsreel narrator voice: "When you cast a very long shadow, either you're extremely tall or the sun is about to set. Next time, rehearsing for the end, on 'Hellcats of the White House.'"

"Hellcats of the White House: The Bel Air Years" "Our story opens in the bedroom of the Reagans' Bel-Air retreat.… The former president is watching a large screen television waiting for news of a court decision to be announced. Nancy is on the phone while her heels receive a light buffing…." This episode is built around news that Ronald Reagan would not be compelled to testify in Oliver North's criminal trial for involvement in the Iran-Contra Affair.85

Le Show's final "Hellcats" episode responded satirically to news of the forthcoming "Walsh Report," the federal government's last word on Iran-Contra.86 Shearer reprised this episode of "Hellcats" on a "Highlights from Le Show: The First 20 Years" episode on June 29, 2003

George H. W. Bush: "Notes for Presidential Memoirs" and radio speeches

The recurring Le Show segment "Notes for Presidential Memoirs" presented Shearer's President George H. W. Bush dictating diary entries into a tape recorder for future use. The first episode of "Presidential Memoirs" aired soon after the one-term administration's first major failure: Bush's nomination of fellow Texan John Tower as Secretary of Defense.87

Like his predecessor, Reagan, had done, Bush started giving regular radio speeches in an age of television. So, Shearer's Bush gave radio speeches too. "More than two years into his administration, (Bush) has now picked up the tradition of Ronald Reagan in delivering radio speeches — radio! — he was on the radio this weekend delivering pretty much the same speech about the Persian Gulf Crisis, and it was so successful apparently he's going to do another one. And we'll break for that after this next piece of music and then be back for more."

The final episode of "Presidential Memoirs" aired after the 1992 presidential election, in which Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton defeated Bush, making him a one-term president. Shearer sets up the segment, which also features Shearer's Bush introducing his successor to the White House and "the panel where Dick Nixon used to control his little tape thing," with news of presidential records, a central recurring concern across the history of Le Show:

You may have noticed that in the wake of this State Department foofaraw about rummaging through the files, the passport files, the White House Counsel C. Boyden Gray, an old Yalie pal of his boss, George Bush, has issued an opinion that White House employees are legally entitled to erase and destroy telephone logs and computer tapes88 — because, you know, who cares? Why would anybody want to know about that stuff? That and more reflected upon in another cassette from the 'Notes for Presidential Memoirs,' coming up in just moments — you can just feel it — from now.

Shearer also voiced George H. W. Bush on "The Simpsons" ("Two Bad Neighbors," 1996) and "Golden Girls" ("The President's Coming," 1990).

"Clintonsomething"

Just as "Hellcats of the White House" used a cultural artifact as its point of departure for satirizing the Reagans, Shearer chose "Clintonsomething" — an echo of the baby-boomer demographic television drama Thirtysomething (ABC, 1987-1991) — as the title for his satire of President Bill and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and the vernacular-spouting characters surrounding them.

Debuting the week of Clinton's inauguration, the first episode of "Clintonsomething" featured Shearer voicing both of the adult Clintons, Al Gore, James Carville, and Zoe Baird, a corporate lawyer the administration nominated for Attorney General, but whose nomination was withdrawn over hiring an undocumented worker as a babysitter, a controversy dubbed "Nannygate."89

Each episode of the initial "Clintonsomething" series ended with the following coda, accompanied by theme music from Thirtysomething: "Youthful angst and middle-aged power: it all adds up to Clintonsomething." The sign-off changed slightly with each different iteration of the Clintons in public and, via Shearer's capacious imagination, private life.

The Clintons' sustained prominence in public affairs since the 1990s has kept them on Le Show across the intervening decades.

"Clintonsomething: The State Department Years" The segment opens onto a scene of the Clintons meeting for a conversation, with Shearer's masterful Bill Clinton ethopoiesis: "Thanks for making time, Toots – I mean, Madam Secretary."

"Clintonsomething: The Wilderness Years" This segment ends with Shearer's Bill Clinton in a reflective mode: "Wow. Well, sir. This is a day I need to remember for my next memoir…. This is a true pivot point. After all this time, this may be the day I stop thinking about tomorrow."91

George W. Bush: "41 Calls 43" and "Dick Cheney Confidential"

Texas Governor George W. Bush, eldest son of the 41st President and his wife Barbara, became the 43rd President of the United States, establishing what would be described as a family dynasty. Not since the early republic had the United States elected a president's son to the highest office in the land. Whereas John and John Quincy Adams were limited to letters to facilitate distant communication, the Bushes had telephony, wired and wireless; in Shearer's satiric imagination, the sonic folly of their conversations belies the heavy histories their administrations oversaw.

"41 Calls 43" The first episode of "41 Calls 43" aired on March 11, 2001, just two months into the new administration, before the events of 9/11 turned the younger Bush, as the Persian Gulf crisis had the older, into a wartime president. Shearer set up the segment with news from the previous week: "As you know President Bush campaigned in several states with Democratic senators for his tax cut bill and then flew home to his ranch to spend the weekend there, possibly to receive one of those phone calls he sometimes gets from the 41st President of the United States, his not-so-immediate predecessor."

The younger Bush's Secret Service code name is among the recurring gags in "41 Calls 43".

"41 Calls 43: Vacations" How much time the younger Bush spent vacationing at his Texas ranch became a public concern after 9/1192 and thus a recurring topic for satire on Le Show. In the setup to this segment, Shearer reports that the question of how much the president actually works on his "working vacations" at the ranch has attracted criticism from within even the president's own party. This time the younger Bush answers in the code name "Brush-clearing Eagle."

"41 Calls 43: Can I Paint You?" Another stunning example of Shearer's topical comedy and sonic satire, Shearer here extemporaneously sets up another father-son phone conversation with a news item from the previous week about each former president:

You may be aware that two big events occurred this week in the lives of respectively George H. W. and George W. Bush. George H. W. Bush: there was a celebration at College Station, Texas, home of Texas A&M — home of the Aggies — of the 25th anniversary of the George H. W. Bush administration…. And then over in Dallas at the Bush Presidential Library — liberry — there was the opening of an exhibition of paintings by George W. Bush, who basically has painted so far … mainly world leaders, including Tony Blair and Vladimir Putin…. So it just occurred to me maybe to, to tap a phone line and see if the two of them might be chatting.

This time 43 answers the phone "Brush Stroke Eagle."

The folly of Shearer's imagined father-son phone calls in "41 Calls 43" contrasts with the darkness of Shearer's other Bush II-era recurring presidential segment, "Dick Cheney Confidential."

After 9/11, Vice President Cheney stayed out of public sight for several months, in what was mysteriously described as "a secure, undisclosed location."93 The secrecy around Cheney's post-9/11 whereabouts, particularly in the context of increased government surveillance, resulted in Le Show's "Dick Cheney: Confidential," in which Shearer takes his point of satiric departure from the generic conventions of a 1950s detective show.

"Dick Cheney Confidential" first aired on June 2, 2002: "Next, intimate tales of America's first underground Vice President, the action-packed diary of a man who’s less than a heartbeat away from history".

On February 19, 2006, the Sunday after Vice President Cheney accidentally shot a quail-hunting companion in South Texas,94 "Dick Cheney Confidential" provided the culmination of the week's Le Show. Shearer sets up the segment with archival audio of Cheney talking with Fox News's Brit Hume,95 followed by this introduction in Shearer's gruff ethopoiesis of Cheney:

There are two kinds of people in the small town masquerading as a capital city known as Washington, D.C.: the benighted individuals in the political and media elite who would think it's a sign of success when you get your name in the paper, and those of us in the private-ops side of town who know that when that happens it's a sign of failure. This week by the preponderance of the evidence I flopped more repeatedly than a striped bass in a barrel with a face full of bird shot. One thing this little sojourn in the spotlight has taught me was how smart it was to insist that, after the initial terrorist threat period ended, we never gave up the "secure undisclosed." I stopped to think about what this week might have been like with everybody from Brit Hume to Michael Moore camping in our driveway. Makes me wanna have one beer and go shooting….

The Obamas: "Father Knows Best"

Le Show's recurring feature about private life in the Obama White House, "Father Knows Best," featured the president attempting to explain his policy inconsistencies to one of his young daughters, complete with laugh tracks. Shearer composed and performed "Father Knows Best" around generic conventions of the arrestingly popular radio and television series of the same name,96 which starred Robert Young97 and Jane Wyatt.98 "Father Knows Best" made its Le Show debut on May 17, 2009, after President Obama failed to follow up on campaign promises to close Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp in southeastern Cuba.99

Airing after the start of Obama's second term, this episode of "Father Knows Best" features a father-daughter conversation about the President's change of mind about accepting corporate money for his inauguration festivities.100 Shearer sets up the segment with another recurring Le Show segment, "Follow the Dollar".

The final "Father Knows Best" on Le Show addresses Obama administration increases in warrantless National Security Agency surveillance of U.S. residents' internet traffic.101

44 Calls 43

Two-plus years into the Obama administration, the current president calls the former, and the former answers the phone, "Retired Eagle".

"Boom"

Soon after the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Shearer created "Boom" from audio of a news conference by President Obama.102 On Le Show, Shearer sets up this piece of sonic satire with his "News of Inspectors General" segment, reading a report on an investigation into the oil drilling industry that discovered "a culture of lax oversight and cozy ties to industry" during both the Bush and the Obama administrations.103

Shearer then plays audio of a drilling expert explaining "oil spill booming school" and how boom, temporary floating barriers used to attempt to contain oil spills, is supposed to work. The informed rage of the speaker — a good number of words had to be bleeped to prevent FCC fines — contrasts with the sonic satire that follows, exemplifying again the contrast between comedy and gravity in Shearer's work.

In "Boom," the final line Shearer includes from Obama's presser — a question Obama is relaying from his daughter, "Did you plug the hole yet, Daddy?" — speaks to the inadequacy of industry and government response to environmental destruction.

"It's Not My Red Line"

When a 2013 chemical weapons attack tested Obama's claim that he had set a "red line" for U.S. military intervention in Syria based on "international norms,"104 Shearer invented and performed Obama's, Arizona Senator John McCain's, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's various denials of responsibility for determining whether or not to intervene. In addition to synthesizing U.S. history from the Vietnam War era to America's longest war, this satirical masterpiece gets its title from a twist on the name of a British and U.S. improvisational comedy program, "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"105

"We Tortured Some Folks"

In an interview on San Francisco's KALW in 2014, Shearer explained how he approached formulating a satiric response to the December 9, 2014, "Committee Study of the Central Intelligence Agency's Detention and Interrogation Program" (a.k.a. “the C.I.A. Torture Report”106) on Le Show:

Nobody's who's not in the business of governing or some related business can take in something as big as this. So I focused on the details — and especially to answer the thing that you always hear in response to something like this: "Oh, there’s nothing new here." So I focused on Mitchell and Jessen,107 the two contract psychologists who had never interrogated anybody and suddenly found themselves running this program. The torture report tells us they made $80 million for designing — they basically just took these techniques that were basically used to train American troops to avoid giving in under torture during the Korean War — and turned them around on us. And $80 million for that — you know that's a nice career.

The things that Sen. [Ron] Wyden and Sen. [Mark] Udall had warned would shock Americans if they ever became public, which were the things that had never — you know, we knew about the waterboarding, we knew about slamming into walls — I don't want to say those offhandedly, as if they're cool — but we had actually subsumed them already into our consciousness. But the rectal hydration and the rectal feeding for no medical reason was something that, you know, I thought that's a great detail. So I built "Dick Cheney Confidential" around that. It's trying to home in on the details that I find startling or remarkable. I think I can share that with with the listeners.

If it's a song, it's like a phrase that, you know, somebody says. And I suddenly think that phrase just says it all. You know, when President Obama in August at a press conference said, 'We tortured some folks.' I mean, that phrase. I wanna — you know, I still think that's T-shirt worthy….

The torture report to me is so profoundly important. Sadly, the Washington Post today says more than half of the American people think this was a good idea to have done this, which gives you a nice little — I'm not a big poll reader, but it gives you a little window into what the politicians are constantly referring to as "American values." Obama says this isn't who we are. Apparently, it is.108

Shearer, who regularly comments that Le Show does not have a weekly "theme," opened the December 14, 2014, Le Show episode, five days after release of "the torture report," with the following announcement: "This is torture week on Le Show." In addition to news and satire responding to "the torture report," Shearer replayed his earlier satiric song, "Waterboardin' USA," originally composed, performed, and broadcast on Le Show in May 2007, days after former C.I.A. Director George Tenet repeatedly claimed of the agency, "We don't torture people."109

Trump: "The Appresidentice"

Shearer has studied Donald Trump's character for decades, dating to his work in the 1980s as a contributing editor to Spy magazine.110 Trump became a regular object of satire on Le Show beginning in 2013, when Shearer wrote and performed "Caveat Discipulus" ("Let the Student Beware"), a satirical Trump University alma mater.111

Shearer's imagined version of the November 10, 2016, Oval Office transition meeting between just-elected President Trump and his predecessor, President Barack Obama, produced with hyperreal VR developers John MacInnes and Remington Scott, was released just three days after the election as a teaser for a television series Shearer hoped to develop.112

Approximately every month during the Trump Administration, Shearer invented, wrote, produced, and delivered on Le Show an episode of "The Appresidentice," reprising recent news about the administration and voicing all the characters. Shearer constructed this recurring segment around the generic conventions of "The Apprentice," the NBC vehicle that put Trump before the reality television-viewing U.S. public and "turned out to be the ideal launching pad for his improbable presidential campaign," journalist Nancy Benac has written.113

After Trump left Washington and returned to Mar-a-Lago, his private golf resort and "Southern White House," Shearer’s recurring Trump segment continued as "The Marapprentice."

Trump's use of the social media platform Twitter during the 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns and throughout his presidency provided material for seemingly endless satire on television and in other media. Yet it was Trump’s mysterious typo, "covfefe," that fueled some of Shearer's most deft and inventive rhyming, a paragon of prosody for the ear regardless of whether "covfefe" be sounded with a long or short e

"I Don't Like Mosquitoes"

President Donald Trump's July 6, 2016, campaign rally in Cincinnati generated "found sound" that enabled Shearer to turn a moment of candidate distraction and deviation from the script into a sonic portrait of the 45th President of the United States.

Yet the context for the piece is more than campaign politics. Shearer has made environmental news a regular and significant part of Le Show for decades. His ongoing coverage of the effects of glyphosate and neonicotinoids in particular have raised listeners' awareness of endangered birds and bees and other disappearing insects.

To set up this piece of sonic satire, Shearer read a report from the Yale Environment Blog about declining insect populations and the consequent risks for pollination, agriculture, and food production. Yet Shearer prefaced both the news and the satire with a confession that he, too, didn't like insects — when he was a kid: "Listen, please, believe me, if any human on the planet hates insects more than me, I'd like to meet that person. I'm not an insect fan. I spent a portion of my youth that I'm not proud of killing as many ants as humanly possible." This impromptu comment suggests Shearer's capacity to identify at some level with every object of his satire.114

"Kavanaugh Likes Beer"

Shearer's combination of three kinds of found sound — reports on public affairs, already-existing music, and percussive beds for new musical inventions — is showcased in his satiric response to Trump's second U.S. Supreme Court nominee, then-Judge and later Justice Brett Kavanaugh's testimony at his September 27, 2018, Senate confirmation hearing.

In the September 30, 2018, Le Show episode, which contains additional reports about Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's testimony alleging sexual assault by Kavanaugh while they were in high school, Shearer reminds listeners of the opening of an earlier and equally fraught scene in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, the 1991 confirmation hearing of Justice Clarence Thomas, accused by Professor Anita Hill of sexual harassment.

Shearer follows the sonic satire with "You Curse at Girls," an earnest song about the consequences of verbal abuse performed by Fountains of Wayne, whose songs Shearer has played many times over the years on Le Show.
