Here on Vermont Public Radio, I'm your host Rubin Jackson and as always, thank you so, much for tuning in and you know the game plan, right? Stick around. We'll be here sharing music from now until 11 o'clock. Friday night jazz on VPR is made possible by Ellis Music of Bethel Vermont, specializing in sales, service and rental of musical instruments to schools and individuals throughout New England. Tonight's game plan. We are returning to a band we've played more than once since the inception of this incarnation of jazz on Vermont Public Radio, which began five years ago. Can you believe it? 2012, the band in question, Earth Wind and Fire. Now, you may recall that I played a lot of Earth Wind and Fire. We did a show right after the death of the leader, founder of the band, drummer, composer, producer, Maurice White back in February of 2016. I wanted to get back to some more of their music tonight. Here's the thesis, whether two ideas we're playing with and using them as springboards for the music. One came from the leader, Mr. Maurice White, who said, he conceived Earth Wind and Fire as a kind of black opera. Now, you can think of many things when you think of opera, soloist, as in, you know, and with composers you have themes and certainly you got that with this group, this very versatile group. The other thesis is something given to us by
the filmmaker, writer, critic Nelson George, who once called Earth Wind and Fire, the last great black big band. Now, you can look at that literally and you can look at some of the, let's call it the ethos one, associates with bands such as Duke Ellington. Certain themes, certain ways of living and presenting oneself, particularly if you look at the Ellington connection, positive images and that sort of thing. Anyway, tonight, Earth Wind and Fire, a black opera described by Maurice White. So that's what we're doing. Stick around. And we began the show with music from Earth Wind and Fire from last days in time. If you know anything about this band, you know they were among other things and still are a somatic band, giving what people might call positive energy for one of a better word. This from the early 1970s, maybe a different sound to the band to you. It's a piece entitled Time is on your side. Up next, from the same collection last days in time, I wipe it here from my third eye because I'm
thinking high school when I hear this. There are even bands in my hometown of DC called last days in time. It was the band beginning to make itself known in the country, in the community and ultimately in the world. Again, Earth Wind and Fire tonight on Friday night jazz with VPR. This composition featuring one of the principal soloist vocalist, of course, the leader found him Maurice White and the piece. Funky as it wants to be. Remember the children. Remember the children. Remember the children. See the message in the mace. Tells what the future brings.
Yeah. Fightin' in the far home, they say, yeah. And I sold them bad but clean. Say, say, the children. If they hide, they'll take the green. Fightin' in the far home, they say, yeah. Remember the children. Remember the children.
Remember the children. See the message in the mace. Tells what the future brings. Tells what the future brings. Yeah. Fightin' in the far home, they say, yeah. Remember the children. See the message in the mace. Tells what the future brings. Yeah. Fightin' in the far home, they say, yeah.
Remember the children. See the message in the mace. Tells what the future brings. Yeah. Fightin' in the far home, they say, yeah. One more from the ensemble of the evening, here in the first hour of Friday Night Jazz, on Vermont Public Radio, I'm Rubin Jackson, your host and the band in question we're returning to, just a bit of the music given to us by the elements of the universe, Earth, Wind, and Fire, we began the program and we're still hanging around in this neighborhood. The collections called last days and time and we heard remember the children. Once again, if you're just tuning in, thank you for doing so.
We're playing with an image Maurice White provided an interview some years ago and he said that he conceived Earth, Wind, and Fire as a black opera. Now, you know, I hear the ensemble vocals and I think of choruses like one my here in, say Verdi's Nabucco, certainly soloist and again, as I mentioned before, certain themes which come up. So we've heard thus far, remember the children and time is on your side, two pieces of uplift, one of uplift, one of, let's call it social consciousness. Here, we turn to the family, once again, the soloist here, Maurice White, and just a wonderful use of the vocals and maybe a side of Earth, Wind, and Fire, you didn't hear as much once they began the road to crossover. That's, of course, these truths or non-truths are in the ear of the be hearer as saxophone is Dewey Redmond would say, this composition here in hour one from Earth, Wind, and Fire entitled Mom. Now, she gave me words of love, she gave me deeds of love, she gave me thoughts of love,
she had everywhere, yes, oh sugar, she gave meads of joy and joy and joy, And in my life, I've always done, yeah, and in my life, I always care, yeah, And in my life, I've always cared, yeah, and in my life, I've always been, yeah,
But for all I know, I don't smell, yeah, yeah, .
