- Transcript
Hello there and welcome to the second hour of Friday Night Jazz on a VPR I am your host Ruben Jackson. Just a reminder, the sponsor of this week's Friday Night Jazz on VPR are the local owners of flooring America and Williston. Matching flooring options with the taste and budgets of their clients since 1983. Where were you in 1983? Well, I was never mind. 27, something like that. Anywho, on with the music, we are celebrating earthwind and fire tonight, so let's get back to that. Starting hour two with music from the collection head to the sky. Now again, playing with this notion of the idea of black opera, which Maurice White provided an interviewer with some years ago and themes, consistent themes within the ensembles output message songs. Certainly a hallmark of this group will start with one and again, maybe a side of earthwind and fire you haven't heard in a while or maybe unfamiliar with. Maurice White on Kalemba and vocals, a little Latin
influence here. I mean, a wonderful what pastiche of stuff. So beginning hour two earthwind and fire and evil. We are celebrating earthwind and fire tonight, so let's get back to that.

EWF earthwind and fire from head to the sky here in hour two of Friday night jazz on VPR I am your host, Rubin Jackson. Thanks, sis always for hanging out with the brother. We are celebrating earthwind and fire tonight, so let's get back to that.
The Black Opera of earthwind and fire in this edition of the program, Philip Bailey once again lead vocalist, you know, just coming from the Metropolitan Opera of the Church, Philip Bailey out of Denver, Colorado and head to the sky. We are celebrating earthwind and fire tonight, so let's get back to that. We are celebrating earthwind and fire tonight, so let's get back to that.

We are celebrating earthwind and fire tonight, so let's get back to that. We are celebrating earthwind and fire tonight, so let's get back to that. Earthwind and fire here in the second hour of Friday night jazz on VPR, the title track
from head to the sky, Mr. Philip Bailey on vocals, those soaring vocals, soaring, and of course a hallmark, certainly a standard, one of the band's many standards and keep your head to the sky. As Duke Ellington would say, when a soloist had more than one feature following the other, Johnny Hodges returns for Philip Bailey returns for composition and title clover, this also taken from head to the sky as we celebrate, or as Maurice White, the leader and founder of the group would say celebrate right on the music of earthwind and fire from head to the sky and clover, Johnny Graham on that guitar is my father would say toward the end. We are celebrating earthwind and fire tonight, so let's get back to that.

We are celebrating earthwind and fire tonight, so let's get back to that. To be a bit redundant, here's another message song from the ensemble as we look at some
thematic links and just the march of the music of earthwind and fire here in the second hour of the program. Once again, this composition taken from head to the sky, a bit of the FONK. Well, funk, as we would say colloquially, of course the word comes from a West African term FONQE, so we were brought here and we brought, among other things, the funk. Here's a great example. From head to the sky, build your nest. We are celebrating earthwind and fire tonight, so let's get back to that.

back to that. To more by the elements of the universe as we make our way through this addition of Friday Night Jazz on VPR, from open our eyes to compositions, Mr. Andrew Wolfolk, an also native of Denver Colorado on soprano saxophone, Larry Dunne on piano, also from Denver Colorado, Verdean White
Bass, Marys White on drums, a little bit, a little jazz there, piece written by saxophoneist, Eddie Harris, spasmodic movements, and we started that set with another instrumental also taken from open our eyes, 1974s, open our eyes, and drum song. Next, the ensemble. Again, we're playing with the idea of Marys White's credo that this is a group founded as a black opera, I mean, you can take this so many ways, can't you? We're having fun with that. Hope you're having fun listening, earthwind and fire, and feelin' blue. Is it down? Is it here? And what do you see in the dark? Is it real? Is it me?
Are you scared? Do you believe in a sad? Are you good? Are you bad? Are you bad? And can't you confess to the morning light and be true? What did you do? Where is you? Feelin' blue. Where is you? Feelin' blue. Do you know who you are in the dream? Do you again when you open your eyes and you
feelin' blue? Where is you? Feelin' blue. Where is you? Feelin' blue. Do you know who you are in the dream? Do you know who you are in the dream? Do you believe in a sad? Are you good? Are you bad? Are you bad?
Are you good? Are you bad? Are you bad? Just leave it alone. Let it go. Will you see it? Will you wait as long then why? Will you sleep in your chair? No, there's not much to do with it's you. Feelin' blue. Where is you? Feelin' blue. Where is you? Feelin' blue. Where is you? Feelin' blue.
Earthwind and fire from open our eyes in the second hour of Friday night jazz on VPR from again open our eyes and feelin' blue. One more thematically based, well I guess all music is thematically based isn't it, whether it's instrumental or but one more message song here. And one of again whether the hallmarks of the quote unquote black opera is Maurice White referred to Earthwind and fire and that's the foundation of this show tonight. It's a fascinating idea and one maybe people weren't aware of during Maurice White's lifetime or because I think this band is both highly influential and modestly documented in terms of interviews and ideas purpose that kind of thing. Let's share a bit of the music with you. I'll put the egghead back right now. What we'll hear two pieces from open our eyes 1974 starting with devotion.
Philip Bailey on vocals and of course the wonderful vocal chorus thinking of again people like Verity who wrote for chorus from pieces operas like Navuco. We'll hear devotion and we'll conclude the set with fair but so uncool. Music Music Music
