Hello there. We will begin our two of Friday Night Jazz and VPR and welcome. Welcome, of course. Gotta be a good host here. With more music from tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, this from the Symphonic collection. And this is an original by Joe Lovano entitled Alexander the Great. Another taste of tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano here in the second hour of Friday Night Jazz
on Vermont Public Radio. This original by Joe Lovano entitled Alexander the Great. Our next recording is a newly issued recording, if I may be so redundant. It features the talents of the recently deceased keyboardist composer Joe Sample, a long time member of a group which was first called the Jazz Crusaders. They then became the Crusaders. This again, this isn't a recording with an extended ensemble with the NDR Big Band. We're looking at not well primarily, I would say, recordings with jazz musicians and larger ensembles. Some, in some cases, looking at jazz musicians playing with the European classical traditions, as we did an hour one with Yuri Keynes, work with interpreting Mozart. This Joe Sample in the NDR Big Band, this entitled Children of the Sun. What we'll hear tonight,
we'll get a lot more of this on the air, is a piece by Joe Sample called Albatross Day. The late keyboardist Joe Sample with the NDR Big Band, this a newly issued CD called
Children of the Sun, here in hour two of Friday Night Jazz on VPR. Again, this piece written by Mr. Sample, it's entitled Albatross Day. We last played excerpts from a ranger composer, band leader Gary McFarlane's extended work entitled America, the Beautiful, an account of its disappearance around July 4th of last year. What we'll hear from this tonight. Again, this came out in 1968, I should say, and it's, you know, you think about works in that general chronological time period. Gary McFarlane from 68, looking at the changes in America, the sprawl, etc., the ecological questions. Three years later, of course, you get what Jesse Jackson called a sermon from the studio Marvin Gays, what's going on. This was in the air, and open-intended, and you know,
many members of what's called jazz, or the jazz community have looked at social ecological concerns throughout the history of this music. So, from 1968, Gary McFarlane and an extended work, what we'll hear, first movement, which is entitled on this site, shall be erected, hour two, hour two, the second movement, I should say, 80 miles an hour through beer can country, Gary McFarlane and friends, here in the second hour of Friday night jazz in VPR. Gary McFarlane and friends, here in the second hour of Friday night jazz in VPR.
Gary McFarlane and friends, here in the second hour of Friday night jazz in VPR. .
