Hey there, hey there. Welcome to the third and final hour of Friday Night Jazz on VPR, the Earthwinden Fire Celebration Edition of Friday Night Jazz on VPR. That's right. You may recall the fact that we did an EWF show in February of 2016 after the death of the leader and founder of this drummer producer, composer, vocalist, everything, Mr. Maurice White. And I've been thinking about presenting a bit more of the music, and that's where we are tonight. Once again, if you're just tuning in, welcome. We're kind of playing with this, let's call it a thesis. Maurice White told an interviewer that he considered Earthwinden Fire among other things a black opera. So you can think of, as I've said before, themes, soloist. You can look at that anyway you'd like to. But I love that image, and that's a bit of the, let's call it the springboard for this show. Certainly the music itself, but you know there are certain themes which pop up in this music. Certainly songs of uplift, great vocals, meshings of musical traditions.
So let's get back to that, shall we? All right. Starting with 1976's Spirit Get Away. Let's get away. So you say you'll try, but the jumps can't find a bad job. People around you, giving you a fresh shot. Try to resist. All ahead that's all around you. Every day's dead. And we'll hold you. So come, take me by the hand.
We're in the struggle ring. Oh, no, we can't. Oh, no, we can't. Oh, no, we can't. Watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, oh Oh, what for the side, the lead in the right direction You know the heat, there's a bad reflection There's a way, what you have been singing You know them, you're all a genius So call, call, call, call, call, call, call Get away, get away, live with the night
For the side comes up in the morning Nothing's hiding, it all seem boring Make up your mind, which way to go about that To do your rule, just go without it So call, call, call, call, call, call, call, call You know we get, I know we get, I know we get away Get away, put your, put your, put your, let's sing tonight Watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it now Let's get away, put your, put your, put your, let's sing tonight In today, get away, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Get away, live today, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. A composition written by Baloi Taylor and Peter Kor, here in our three of Friday Nijay's on VPR beginning, our three of the program, initially can see you because a kind of bebop swing at least arrangement. So if you think about the intro, but that up, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, you know, it's kind of those skittering lines and you could maybe tweet the tempo and see where it went. But once again, the versatility of this ensemble, Earthwing and Fire was celebrating them tonight, this edition of Friday Night Jazz on VPR and the lyrics,
the modulations, I know we can, I know we can, I know we can get away. For great jazz, 24 hours a day, wherever you are, check out VPR jazz 24, you can listen at vpr.net and on your smartphone. And let's we forget, the sponsor of this week's Friday Night Jazz on VPR are the local owners of flooring America in Williston, matching flooring options with the taste and budgets of their clients since 1983. Back to the music of Earthwing and Fire, this piece, another message song, it's so true, too, it's the first line on your ear. Ain't it funny that the way your feel shows on your face? On your face, EWF here in our three of the show. And no matter how you try to hide, it states your case. Now I'm proud to break the spirits down to the ground.
And never let you see the good things all around. Every time you see the light, I feel this flow. I look right out and we're both dope, but that can't make me sad, just can't make me. Because I've been here before, don't wanna go no more. for the promise in your life while you're rockin' rest keep us by the place help yourself to pray oh wish your promise on a day
and a turn to rain your sunshine in your heart is pain we wonder how your attitude is going down it's waking up, shaking hands safe and sound every time it's even late I feel this blow I look around and the waves won't go but that can't make me sad but that can't make me oh what's up in there before don't wanna go no more don't be left saddest, messed up feel my need for the promise in your life while you're rockin' rest keep us by the place help yourself to pray
yes it is yes, walk and shake just walk and shake me don't make me sad I forget before don't wanna go no more don't let it drag me back oh you can shake me the way I feel it took me up tomorrow I feel the same moment and if I don't let me feel it took all you made yeah, yeah my heart is feeling I look with you but you're not you're the sunshine in your heart
you can shake me but I'm better up tomorrow I start the wonder what's going down now I'm feeling that feeling my heart is feeling yeah I start the wonder what's going down in your life in your safety I start the wonder in your life are you dealing with it every day or the cause of strife yeah yeah yeah yeah
One more by EWF, Earthwind & Fire whose work we're celebrating tonight to quote Marie Swite you know, I conceived Earthwind & Fire as a kind of black opera so we're dealing with the black opera of Earthwind & Fire instrumental interludes vocalist, you know, Philip Bailey Jessica Cleaves, Marie Swite this group gets sang they can play they still can once again, from man, spirit we heard on your face Mr. Philip Bailey native of Colorado returns for two pieces here in the third hour of the program starting with a wonderful love song co-written by the aforementioned Charles Stepney and I think you know, Earthwind & Fire fans of course like fans of any group have their favorite recordings I won't call this a favorite but listen to what's going on in this piece of course the magnificent voice of Philip Bailey
the incredible lyrics the way the group could accompany the solo is the vocal soloist with such gorgeous vocal harmonies this of course the work of Marie Swite and the aforementioned Charles Stepney but you can hear you know the poly rhythms as this piece makes its way to the end it's just a wonderful again, their versatility don't sleep on their versatility two by Earthwind & Fire imagination and Philip Bailey returns for spirit music music music music music music music music
music music music It's not hard to conceive, loves us to see, I'm imagining you and me Many, many days, our shadows fail, see visions of an old writer Rise and set the morning light, ooh and the morning light is you I'm imagining you, there's not hard to conceive, loves us to see, I'm imagining you and me
Many, many days, our shadows fail, see visions of an old writer Love, love, love, love, love, love You're the dream I prayed would come along, to make me open to see, day and night you live inside my heart You're the flame of love to me
It's not hard to conceive, loves us to see, I'm imagining you, I'm imagining me The beauty we both can't see It's not hard to conceive, loves us to see, I'm imagining you and me It's not hard to conceive, loves us to see, I'm imagining you and me
It's not hard to conceive, loves us to see, I'm imagining you and me It's not hard to conceive, loves us to see, I'm imagining you and me Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh This has passed in a day, still we walk in a path that leads to the love
Shining down on this great beyond, thoughts that light us, that love you night us Then turn your face to the will, and taste his love with him You burn up the wind, everlasting love, you can defeat, and every time he smiles, you bless a child Our spirits will perpetuate our spirits, meditate love and faith
We must make up our privacy, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh That the light is he, shouting on you and me And the one who gave you what we must pay Look up to each other's eyes Humanity will rise You love Hey You love Hey
You love Yeah You love Oh And our spirits Oh They will be one Yeah They'll be one Come on Two more by the ensemble of the evening, Earthwinden fires We make our way through the last hour of Friday night jazz on VPR With Ruben Jackson from Spirit We heard in reverse order the title track And we began that set with
I imagine my heart was you see what imagination can do It's not hard to conceive Loves ecstasy of imagining you and me Earthwinden fire Imagine the sound Celebrate Nerfwinden fire here in the third and final hour of the show Stick around, we are not done yet Another message song from the elements of the universe This also taken from Spirit And a bit more of the Some people call it friendly funk To say it Earthwinden fire and Saturday night Try it out
You have to watch Saturday night the moment is bright John Selenay Shondown If watch Saturday night the moment is bright Shining down as pop is light Music dawn around the hills Set the stage and atmosphere Made a dress to sew the chains Just a pair to eat the race Dice a knife in your domain Biggest man in history Cause that's enough You'll pay for how Find your place and after all I saw a face now in the crowd Saying nothing, talking now Come, it's just a day Living as we play None of the branches fall into Will the sun say Do it what you feel What you feel Games can't be unreal What did I do when you bought There ain't no one here to go
Life is still your mystery You see, you see, you see me Men and friends don't gas the ground And hope the bell safe finds out We're emphasize to make it clear I stop that nature At this fair Find your good-do-bat looking glass I feel your show was far and fast When you're going away you can see the sun You can play the time and have it fun Yeah, how Life is just a day Really get you glad None of the branches fall into Will the sun say Do it what you feel Games can't be unreal What did I do when you bought There ain't no one here to go Now it's all this mystery You see, you see, you see me
You know what you feel We are real Life is just a day Life is still your mystery You see, you see, you see me You know what you feel Games can't be real Life is still your mystery Just a day Saturday What you gonna do when the night is through When the crowd is going And your dream is through Yeah Saturday Tonight, tonight, Disappear, Tonight. Yeah. Basically, I find everything that I'm telling you, is all you need, is all you need. Oh, I smell something.
Marys White on lead vocals here in the third and final hour of Friday Night Jazz on Vermont Public Radio with your host Pearson Mary Jackson's musically smitten son Rubin. Once again, the collection is called Spirit and we heard Saturday night. Another instrumental from this ensemble. Okay, let's get the soloist in order here for you. The return of Andrew Woolfolk on soprano saxophone native of Denver, Colorado. My man, one of the great rhythm guitar players, but he could play some lead to just a great guitarist. But certainly one of the greatest rhythm guitars in the history of, is my follow it's a guitar. I mean, you can hear him riffing on this piece too.
More beautiful polyrhythmic work by Verdeen White, just the band Smokin, Smokin, Smokin from Spirit. The instrumental was entitled Bio. And we heard Boom like that too. . .
. . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . .
. . . . . Earth Wind and Fire from Spirit here in our three of Friday night jazz on VPR. Again, an instrumental, Maurice White on Kalimba. Andrew Woolfawks, a piano saxophone, Al McCay on guitar, the whole band. Just laying it down for you, the Phoenix horns. Just see the wings of the Phoenix spreading here in the third and final hour. And the instrumental entitled bio.
For great jazz, 24 hours a day, wherever you are, check out VPR. J.S. 24. You can listen to VPR.net and on your smartphone. Okay, here's more live music from the ensemble of the evening, Earth Wind and Fire. This gives us a chance to also touch upon music from 1977's all-in-all collection. This is a favorite of many, many devotees of the band. This recorded in 1980 in Brazil, that landmark tour of Brazil taken by the band. And I hope that this stuff comes out on DVD one day. It is as important, I think, as Duke Ellington say, 1933 trip to Europe for many reasons. But stop me on the street now. I'll tell you why I think that. So, from real after dark, we will start with a version of Serpentine Fire. I know y'all ready to plot it now, right?
Are you sure? All right, we're going to have to head around the house to stay and get on up on your feet. Let's get it together. Get on up. Woo! Now, let me see your hands if I have your hands. Let me look at you. Let's put it together like this. Check it out now. Make it feel right. Woo! Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay. Feel it now. Woo, yeah. When I see your face, I can call it something. Stop and shine. Tell all about it. I need to fulfill it as a duty sign. Though it is here, there is no fear. Probably it could be. But when I'm wet and full of stress, I ride to the discreet. Woo!
I see your face, like you call it something. Stop by your duty, don't it, don't it? Don't let it affect the groove. It's not a meaning and a lie to me. Let me hear you sing it, y'all. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. Wow! I've got 50 17, too I like the choir. Here we go! Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Oh, yeah. Follow me! Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's really cool. What you got today? Let me get you a boo. A boo.
Hey man, a bale. Oh, I'm a nacerdy guy Show me, I'm a nacerdy guy Do it man, I'm wonderin' Show me, I'm wonderin' Show me, yeah Oh and blow me Oh, I'm a nacerdy guy Show me, I'm a nacerdy guy Do it man, I'm wonderin' Show me, I'm wonderin' Where are youepin?
Bird Scooter! Oh hello, Slim and Young! Here we go! Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah! in'! Oh, yeah, oh, yeah Oh, yeah, oh, yeah
Oh, yeah, oh, yeah Oh, yeah, oh, yeah Oh, yeah, oh, yeah Oh, yeah, oh, yeah Oh, yeah, oh, yeah Two recordings by Earthwind and Fire here in the third and final hour of Friday night
jazz on VPR once again recorded 1980 in Bratzil from Rio after dark we concluded with Brazilian rhyme and we started with a concert version of another piece heard on the 1977 studio recording all-in-all serpentine fire. One more piece from originally heard on 1977's all-in-all collection as we celebrate Earthwind and Fire all night tonight you know not all night all night but all night within the context of this program. on the VPR. Hope you've enjoyed this celebration. Once again, Maurice White, the leader, founder and drummer, passed away last year, February 2016. Total reporter, he conceived Earth Wind and Fire as a black opera, so we're called, we're celebrating the black opera and the many other things this group is tonight, two recordings ending with music from I Am, the composition Let Your Feel and Show, and we started with music from Faces 1980 and turn it into something good. Before I say goodbye for another Friday, I want to thank you sincerely for hanging out with me and remind you, once again, you know, if all things are equal, the fates allow and all those wonderful things, we'll see you up again next Friday. You're invited. I mean, I think you know that, but I just want to tell you once again, because I'm Southern and that's the way I was brought up, that's the way I roll.
For feedback, request questions, hit me, rjaxon at vpr.net. We are going to conclude with a bit more instrumental music magic here from 1976's Spirit. This piece originally heard as like a tantalizing fragment on the LP. It is entitled Departure and there's another extended version, so we'll hear Departure, the traveler Mr. Maurice White on Calumba and we'll conclude with the African Symphony. On list and supported Vermont Public Radio, WVPS Burlington at 107.99, WRVT Rutland at 88.7 WBT N. Bennington at 94.3 WVP A. St. John's Berry at 88.5 WVPR Windsor at 89.5 WVB A.
