<v Narrator 1>[music plays] Four children enter an enchanted land through a magic wardrobe and find <v Narrator 1>themselves fulfilling an ancient prophecy. <v Mr. Beaver>When two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve sit in those four <v Mr. Beaver>thrones, then it will be the end. <v Mr. Beaver>Not only of the White Witch's reign, but of her life. <v Narrator 1>To defeat the prophecy, the witch unleashes all of her evil power and holds <v Narrator 1>one of the children hostage. <v White Witch>That human creature is mine! <v White Witch>His life is my property! <v White Witch>His blood is forfeit. <v Narrator 1>To save Edmund, Aslan, the true ruler of Narnia, makes a fateful <v Narrator 1>pact with the White Witch. <v White Witch>You have given me Narnia forever! <v White Witch>You have lost your own life and you have not saved <v White Witch>his. <v White Witch>In that
<v White Witch>knowledge Aslan, despair and ?inaudible?. <v Narrator 1>The dramatic conclusion to the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe on <v Narrator 1>Wonderworks. [theme music plays] <v Narrator 2>Wonderworks is made possible by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting <v Narrator 2>with additional funding from this station and other public television stations <v Narrator 2>and the National Endowment for the Arts. <v Narrator 2>[music plays] <v Peter>We have come, Aslan.
<v Aslan>[purring] Welcome, Peter. Son of Adam. <v Aslan>Welcome Susan and Lucy. <v Aslan>Daughters of Eve. And beavers, welcome <v Aslan>to you. You have guided the sons of Adam and daughters <v Aslan>of Eve so bravely to me. <v Aslan>But where is the fourth child? <v Mr. Beaver>Oh Aslan. He has tried to betray them. <v Mr. Beaver>He has joined the White Witch. <v Peter>That was partly my fault Aslan. <v Peter>I was angry with him. <v Peter>And I'm sure that helped him to go wrong. <v Lucy>Please, Aslan. <v Lucy>Can anything be done to save Edmund? <v Aslan>All shall be done. <v Aslan>But it may be more difficult than any of you can
<v Aslan>imagine. <v Aslan>Meanwhile, let the feast be prepared. <v Aslan>[music plays] Come, <v Aslan>son of Adam. I will show you <v Aslan>the far off ?side? of the castle where you are to be king. <v Aslan>There ?inaudible? is Cair Paravel ?of the four? thrones in one of which you must sit as <v Aslan>king. <v Aslan>[purring] I show it to you because you are the first <v Aslan>born and will be high king
<v Aslan>over all the rest. [horn playing] [screaming] <v Aslan>[Maugrim growling] [screaming] Back! Let the prince win his ?inaudible?. [Maugrim screaming] [swords clanking] [cheering] After <v Aslan>him! He will go to his mistress, the White Witch.
<v Aslan>Now is your chance to rescue the fourth son of Adam. <v Aslan>Go! [creatures cawing] <v Aslan>Son of Adam. <v Aslan>You have forgotten to clean your sword. <v Aslan>Come. Kneel. [music playing] Rise <v Aslan>up, Sir Peter Wolfsbane.
<v Aslan>And whatever happens, never forget to wipe your sword. <v White Witch>Maugrim... dead? <v Ginarrbrik>Aslan'll be after us! You better fly, Your Majesty, you better fly! <v White Witch>Silence! <v White Witch>There need be no flying. <v White Witch>You! Go fetch my werewolves and the spirits of all dark trees. <v White Witch>And I! I shall summon the others to come to me as speedily <v White Witch>as they can. [music plays] <v White Witch>[reciting a spell] ?inaudible? All whose evil works for me! Have <v White Witch>I not still the wand?
<v White Witch>Shall not the ranks of the enemy turn to stone even as they come? <v White Witch>Come to me, <v White Witch>?evil?. <v White Witch>Four thrones in Cair Paravel. How <v White Witch>if only three were filled? <v White Witch>That would not fulfill the prophecy. <v Ginarrbrik>Yet it might be better to keep this one for bargaining with. <v White Witch>Oh, yes. <v White Witch>And have him rescued! <v Ginarrbrik>Then we better do what we have to do then at once. <v White Witch>I want the sacrifice on the stone table. <v White Witch>That is the proper place. <v White Witch>That is where such things have always been done <v White Witch>before. <v Ginarrbrik>Could be a long time before the stone table is again put to its proper use. <v White Witch>Then let it be done now!
<v White Witch>And here. <v White Witch>Prepare the victim. [flying animals] [White Witch and Ginarrbrik laughing] <v Mrs. Beaver>Good morning. I brought you some milk.
<v Susan>Thank you. <v Mrs. Beaver>Son of Adam. Daughters of Eve. <v Mrs. Beaver>Your brother has come back. <v Peter>Where is he? <v Mrs. Beaver>He is with Aslan. <v Susan>Oh dear. Edmund! [children running] <v Aslan>[purring] Here is your brother. <v Aslan>There is no need to talk about what is past. <v Edmund>I'm sorry. <v Peter>That's alright. <v Edmund>I am sorry. <v Susan>Yes, Edmund. [children laughing and hugging] <v Faun 1>Sire, there is a messenger from the enemy.
<v Aslan>Hmm. Let him approach. [inaudible murmuring] What <v Aslan>is your message, son of Earth? <v Ginarrbrik>The queen of Narnia and Empress of the Lone Islands desires safe conduct <v Ginarrbrik>to come and speak with you. <v Mr. Beaver>Queen of Narnia, indeed! <v Mr. Beaver>Why, of all that ?seek? ! <v Aslan>Peace, Beaver. <v Aslan>Tell your mistress that I grant her safe conduct on one condition: that <v Aslan>she leave her wand behind at that rock. <v Ginarrbrik>She expected such a request and agrees. <v Aslan>My people will go with you to see that the condition is properly observed. <v Lucy>But, what if she turns him to stone?
<v Peter>I think they're thinkin' the very same thing. <v Peter>But sure it'll be all right. He wouldn't send them if it weren't. <v Peter>[music plays] [animals crying] <v White Witch>Aslan. <v White Witch>You have a traitor there! <v Aslan>His offense was not against you.
<v White Witch>Have you forgotten the deep magic? <v Aslan>Deep magic from the dawn of time. <v White Witch>You know what is written there? <v White Witch>On that very table of stone! <v White Witch>You know the magic that was put into Narnia at the very beginning. <v White Witch>You know that every traitor belongs to me <v White Witch>as my lawful prey. <v White Witch>And that for every treachery, I have the right <v White Witch>to kill. <v White Witch>[crowd murmuring] You know, Aslan, that human creature is mine! <v White Witch>His life is my property! <v White Witch>His blood is forfeit to me. <v Faun 1>Come and take it then! <v White Witch>[laughing] Fool! Do you think your master can rob me of my
<v White Witch>rights?! He knows the deep magic better than that. <v White Witch>He knows that unless I have blood, as the law <v White Witch>states, the whole of Narnia will be <v White Witch>overturned and will perish [gasps] in fire and water! <v Aslan>It is true. <v Aslan>I do not deny it. <v Susan>Oh, Aslan! Can't you do something? <v Aslan>Work against the deep magic. <v Aslan>Wait. All of you. <v Aslan>I will talk to the witch alone. <v Aslan>[music playing] [Lucy crying] I <v Aslan>have settled the matter.
<v Aslan>She has renounced her claim on your brother's blood. <v White Witch>But how do I know this promise will be kept? <v Aslan>[roars] Come! We must move from this place at once. <v Aslan>It will soon be needed for other things. <v Aslan>Tonight, we encamp in the forest. <v Lucy>I'm dying to ask Aslan about his arrangements with the Witch. <v Susan>Everyone is- <v Peter>And nobody will. <v Lucy>He certainly showed it, didn't he? <v Edmund>Don't underestimate the power of the witch. <v Edmund>[music plays] <v Aslan>The witch and her army will almost certainly fall back to her
<v Aslan>house and prepare for a siege. <v Aslan>You may or may not be able to cut her off and prevent her from reaching <v Aslan>it. So, you must have two battle plans ready. <v Aslan>One plan is for assaulting her castle. <v Aslan>The other is for fighting her and her forces in the forest for it will be difficult to <v Aslan>know where she will decide to strike. <v Peter>Yes, I see that. <v Peter>But- <v Aslan>You must post scouts at all outlying points so that she cannot steal up and catch <v Aslan>you ?unawares?. <v Peter>But you'll be there yourself, Aslan. <v Aslan>[sighs] I can give you no promise of that. <v Susan>Is he still there?
<v Peter>Yes. <v Susan>He's seemed so sad all afternoon. <v Peter>He's not going to be there. <v Edmund>At the battle? <v Peter>He's leaving it to me. <v Peter>To us. <v Peter>But he wouldn't desert us. <v Peter>Just as we need him. <v Susan>Of course he wouldn't. <v Lucy>Unless he had to. [music plays] <v Susan>Can't you sleep either? <v Lucy>Not a wink. Susan, I have the most horrible feeling. There's something hanging over us. <v Susan>I know. <v Susan>Something is going to happen. Something terrible Aslan's got to do. <v Lucy>Let's go find him. Look! [wind blowing] <v Aslan>Children.
<v Aslan>Children! Why are you following me? <v Lucy>We couldn't sleep. <v Aslan>Ah. <v Susan>May we come with you? <v Aslan>Yes. <v Aslan>Yes, I should be glad of company tonight. <v Aslan>You may come if you will promise to stop <v Aslan>when I tell you and leave me to go on alone. <v Susan>We promise we will. <v Lucy>Thank you Aslan. <v Lucy>[music plays] Aslan. Dear Aslan! What is wrong?
<v Lucy>Can't you tell us? <v Susan>Are you ill, Aslan? <v Aslan>No. Not ill. Lay your hands on my main so that I can feel you're there. <v Aslan>[sighing] Here, you must stop. <v Aslan>And whatever happens, do not let yourselves be seen. <v Aslan>Or your lives will be in danger.
<v Aslan>Remember, do not let yourselves be seen. <v Aslan>Farewell. <v Evil Creatures>[screaming] [chanting] [evil laughter from the White Witch] <v White Witch>Look who has come! ?inaudible? [inaudible shouting] Now! <v White Witch>Let him first...
<v White Witch>be shaved! [cheering] [scissors clipping] <v Creature 1>It's just a big cat after all! ?inaudible? <v Susan>[sobbing] Brutes. Brutes. <v White Witch>Muzzle him! [cheering] <v Susan>Coward. <v Lucy>[sobbing] Cowards! <v White Witch>Nah! And now who has won!
<v White Witch>Fool! Did you think by all this you would save the human <v White Witch>creature? As agreed, in our pact, <v White Witch>I will kill you instead of him [Lucy sobbing]. <v White Witch>And so the deep magic from the dawn of time will be <v White Witch>appeased! <v White Witch>But! <v White Witch>When you are dead, what is to stop <v White Witch>me from killing him too? <v White Witch>You have given me Narnia forever! <v White Witch>You have lost your own life and you have not saved <v White Witch>his. In that knowledge, <v White Witch>Aslan, despair and die! [screaming] [Lucy sobbing]
<v White Witch>[scary music] And now! Follow me all! We'll ?settle? this war and crush the human vermin and the traitors! Now that the great fool, that cat, lies dead, and the whole land of <v White Witch>Narnia is mine! [screaming] <v Lucy>?inaudible? <v Lucy>[music plays] [crying] Horrible muzzle.
<v Lucy>Can't we take it off? <v Susan>Do you think we should untie him as well? <v Lucy>Mean things. They tied them so tight ?inaudible? <v Lucy>we'll never get them undone. <v Susan>We must. <v Susan>Keep trying [crying]. <v Lucy>No use! [crying] <v Susan>Ugh! Mice! [squeaking] Horrid little mice crawling all over him! Go away you little beasts! <v Lucy>Wait! Do you see what they're doing?
<v Susan>Why, they're nibbling at the chords. <v Lucy>They must be friendly mice. <v Lucy>Poor little things. <v Lucy>They don't realize that... that Aslan is dead. [crying] [birds chirping] <v Susan>They're gone. <v Lucy>Shouldn't we be getting back to camp? <v Lucy>If there's going to be trouble? <v Susan>We can't just leave him lying there. <v Susan>Oh my legs are almost giving way. I feel so tired. <v Lucy>Well, we have been up all night.
<v Susan>[music plays] Caire Paravel. <v Lucy>Do you suppose we'll ever reach it? <v Lucy>[crashing] They're doing something worse to him! Come on! <v Susan>What's happened? <v Lucy>[panting] They might have left his body alone. <v Susan>But who has done it? What is it? <v Lucy>Oh, magic. <v Aslan>[purring] Yes, more magic. <v Susan>Aslan! <v Lucy>Oh Aslan! <v Lucy>You're not dead, Aslan. <v Susan>You're not ?inaudible?. <v Aslan>Do I look like it? <v Aslan>[laughter] <v Lucy>Oh you're real! You're real! <v Susan>Aslan! <v Lucy>Aslan! <v Aslan>Oh... I feel my strength coming back to me!
<v Aslan>I feel it is time for a roar. <v Aslan>You'd better put your fingers in your ears. <v Aslan>[roaring] <v Susan>Aslan. <v Lucy>Could we ask you- <v Susan>How did it happen? <v Susan>We saw you on the stone table. <v Susan>Tied and- we saw you. <v Aslan>The witch knows the deep magic. <v Aslan>But there is a magic deeper still, which she has never known for her knowledge goes <v Aslan>back only to the dawn of time. <v Aslan>In the stillness and the dark before time ever
<v Aslan>began, there was a different incantation. <v Aslan>When a willing victim was committed no treachery offers his life <v Aslan>in a traitors ?inaudible?, the stone table will <v Aslan>crack. <v Aslan>And death itself will be denied. <v Lucy>Oh, I see. <v Lucy>We cried our heads off. <v Lucy>And you knew all along it would be alright? <v Aslan>I knew of the old incantation. <v Aslan>But, it has never been put to the test until <v Aslan>now. <v Susan>You took that risk to save Edmund. <v Aslan>Come! We've a long journey to do, you must ride on me. <v Aslan>[gasping] [music plays] [laughter]
<v White Witch>[whispering] We should've gotten here sooner. And attacked by night! <v Ginarrbrik>You'd expect to be in broad daylight we'll catch 'em unprepared. <v White Witch>Form the battle lines and keep all silent. <v Ginarrbrik>Hmm. ?inaudible? to keep silent. <v White Witch>They ?stay silent or?. <v Aslan>[laughter] [gasping] The Witch's castle. Hold tight!
<v Aslan>[gasps] <v Aslan>All well? <v Lucy and Susan>Yes! <v Lucy>What a weird place. It's like a museum. What's Aslan doing? <v Susan>I don't know. <v Aslan>[Aslan breathing] [laughter] [people chattering] <v Susan>Look at that! Is it safe? <v Aslan>Oh, yes. Once the feet are put right, the rest of him will
<v Aslan>follow. <v Susan>That wasn't exactly what I meant. [Aslan breathing] <v Rumblebuffin>?Bless? me. I must have fallen asleep. <v Rumblebuffin>Now, where's that bratty little witch who was runnin' about on the ground? <v Lucy>She had a magic wand and she turned you to stone! <v Rumblebuffin>Hey, what's that? <v Aslan>Turned you to stone she did and I've just restored you. <v Rumblebuffin>Well, ?drop? me. [laughs] <v Lucy>It's him! Aslan Aslan! I found him! It's my friend! Mr. Tumnus the faun! [Aslan breathing]
<v Mr. Tumnus>Lucy! Daughter of Eve, you came back! <v Mr. Tumnus>Where- <v Lucy>She's gone. <v Lucy>Aslan has saved you. <v Mr. Tumnus>[whispering] Aslan. <v Peter>I just wish I knew where those girls were. <v Edmund>With Aslan. Wherever he is. <v Peter>Well I wish they were all here. <v Peter>Especially Aslan. [Edmund sighs] [Animals screeching] [screaming] <v Aslan>Friends. <v Aslan>Friends.
<v Aslan>Our day's work is not yet over. <v Aslan>If the witch is to be defeated, we must leave for the battle at once [everyone cheering]. <v Person 1>But how are we going to get out? The gates are locked! <v Aslan>Hey! You, up there. <v Aslan>What's your name? <v Rumblebuffin>I am giant Rumblebuffin if it please, your honor. <v Aslan>Well, then giant Rumblebuffin <v Aslan>let us out. <v Rumblebuffin>Certainly your honor. It will be a pleasure. <v Rumblebuffin>[crashing] [cheering] [music plays] <v Speaker>[screaming and fighting] <v Aslan>Peter, stand back! [more screaming and fighting] <v Aslan>Quick, Lucy!
<v Lucy>What can I do? <v Susan>Don't you remember what Father Christmas gave you? <v Edmund>[sighs] <v Lucy>Edmund. Edmund! <v Aslan>There are many others wounded. <v Lucy>Yes I know. Wait a minute! <v Aslan>[growls] Daughter of Eve. <v Aslan>Daughter of Eve. <v Aslan>Others are also what the point of death. <v Aslan>Must more people die for Edmund? <v Aslan>[music plays] <v Susan>[Aslan breathing] Look! ?inaudible? has become his old self again.
<v Lucy>Does he know what Aslan did for him? <v Susan>Shh! <v Lucy>But, does he know what the arrangement with the Witch really was? <v Susan>Of course not. <v Lucy>But oughtn't he be told? <v Susan>No, Lucy. It would be awful for him. <v Susan>Think how you'd feel if it were you. <v Peter>Well done Edmund. <v Mr. Beaver>Good ?lad?. <v Edmund>But where's the White Witch? <v Aslan>She will trouble us no more. <v Aslan>[hushing] Friends of the Great Battle, we <v Aslan>shall sleep here tonight.
<v Aslan>And tomorrow, to <v Aslan>Caire Paravel where the prophecy will be fulfilled. <v Aslan>Once a king or queen in Narnia, always
<v Aslan>a king or queen. <v Aslan>Bear it well, Sons of Adam. <v Aslan>Bear it well, Daughters of Eve. <v Aslan>[cheering] <v Crowd>[cheering] All hail King Peter! All hail Queen Susan! All hail King Edmund! All hail Queen Lucy! <v Mr. Tumnus>And so the seasons pass and the years pass and <v Mr. Tumnus>all Narnia grows in gratitude to its young rulers.
<v Mr. Tumnus>They have made good laws and kept the peace and saved good trees <v Mr. Tumnus>from being cut down. <v Mr. Tumnus>They are all loved. <v Mr. Tumnus>The stalwart warrior, King Peter the Magnificent. <v Mr. Tumnus>Queen Susan, the gentle, King Edmund the just. <v Mr. Tumnus>And my first little friend, Queen Lucy the Valiant. <v Lucy>Here is a great marvel. <v Susan>I seem to see a tree of iron! <v Edmund>Madam, if you will look closely upon it, you will see it is no tree, but a pillar of iron <v Edmund>with a lantern set there on. <v Peter>By the lion's mane! Strange device. <v Susan>I just remembered. That thing's a lamp post! <v Lucy>Listen!
<v Susan>It's the Macready. [inaudible speaking] <v Peter>You realize, no time has gone by at all since <v Peter>we climbed into that wardrobe. <v Peter>Which is why we felt we had to explain, sir, how the four fur coats from your wardrobe <v Peter>are missing- <v Susan>And the galoshes- <v Lucy>It was very cold there. <v Edmund>And we didn't even know that if we'd ever get back. <v Susan>And it was the most sensible thing to do. <v Peter>We'll go back and try and look for them if you- <v Digory Kirke>Oh, come now. Nobody wants you to go back searching for a few <v Digory Kirke>?inaudible? old coats. <v Peter>You- you do believe us sir? <v Digory Kirke>Naturally. <v Digory Kirke>But you won't get back to Narnia again by that fruit anyway, <v Digory Kirke>not by the wardrobe. No, no. <v Lucy>You mean we may go back?
<v Digory Kirke>Well of course you'll get back to Narnia someday. <v Digory Kirke>Once a king in Narnia, always a king in Narnia. <v Digory Kirke>By the way, I shouldn't mention this to anyone else, and <v Digory Kirke>you find that they've been there, too. <v Lucy>But how would we know? <v Digory Kirke>Oh, you'll know. <v Digory Kirke>You don't think you are the only ones to have had such an adventure do you? <v Digory Kirke>Oh, miss me what do they teach them at these schools? <v Digory Kirke>[music plays] <v Narrator 2>WonderWorks was made possible by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
<v Narrator 2>With additional funding from this station and other public television stations <v Narrator 2>and the National Endowment for the Arts. <v Narrator 2>[PBS theme] <v Narrator 2>On the next WonderWorks, [Boy: Joseph! <v Narrator 2>Help] the story of a teenage boy who assumes the blame for the death of his best friend <v Narrator 2>and seeks asylum in the New York subway. <v Man 1>I ain't always gonna be around when you get yourself in trouble kid. <v Boy 1>Don't worry about me. <v Boy 1> <v Woman 1>I can do something now with this kid. Maybe I can give him something to hold on to. We all need somethin'. <v Narrator 2>Jasmine Guy and Charles Dutton in Runaway. <v Narrator 2>On The Next WonderWorks.
