<v Woman 1>We've had a great time and keep those phone calls and keep that- your donations coming <v Woman 1>in, because although we will be saying goodbye, we know that you'll be staying for the <v Woman 1>concert and you'll be calling in, too. <v Man 1>He doesn't live in the Bay Area, but it's really a second home. <v Man 1>He's a real favorite of everybody here. Eddie Money at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. <v Man 1>Keep those phones ringin', will ya please? [music plays] <v Eddie Money>[applause] Thank you so much everybody. You know what, we got a new record out.
<v Eddie Money>People say Eddie, when you gonna put out a new record? I said I only put out records when <v Eddie Money>I'm completely broke. Hey, I've got a new record out. <v Eddie Money>[drum hits] [cheering] And here's a song from that new record, it's called, I wanna <v Eddie Money>dedicate this song to all my beautiful friends out there. <v Eddie Money>Hey gang, huh ?inaudible?. <v Eddie Money>It's called Peace in Our Time. [music plays] <v Eddie Money>?We got? Japanese equipment, yeah, you know. [music plays]
<v Jerry Graham>[applause] All right. Eddie Money out at the Cow Palace and coming up, we're going to go
<v Jerry Graham>back and join ?Johnny Rate? again at the Kaiser Center is Oakland- in <v Jerry Graham>Oakland. Now, good evening. My name is Jerry Graham. <v Jerry Graham>I'm from KRON TV and this is an example as if you've been watching <v Jerry Graham>and listening all day of how television stations, radio people, the entire entertainment <v Jerry Graham>community have been pitching in for this wonderful day's <v Jerry Graham>event. And of course, [Barbara: That's true.] I'm glad to see Barbara. <v Barbara Rogers>That's right. The whole community has gotten together on this uh project tonight. <v Barbara Rogers>I'm Barbara Rogers from KPIX TV dropping in between shows because I have to go back and <v Barbara Rogers>do the 11:00 o'clock news tonight. But uh I'm happy to be here and be a part of this <v Barbara Rogers>uh effort to help people who have been devastated by this earthquake, which, of course, <v Barbara Rogers>we were we were safe from. But uh at least uh this is going to help a lot of people who <v Barbara Rogers>need it. We'd like to welcome right now too, the stations in southern California, <v Barbara Rogers>L.A. and other southern California stations have just joined us and we say welcome to <v Barbara Rogers>you. This has been a tremendous day of music, hasn't it? <v Jerry Graham>It has. And it's going to continue until midnight and who knows, maybe even beyond. <v Barbara Rogers>Yeah.
<v Jerry Graham>Before we go any further, whether you're watching on TV or listening in one of the many <v Jerry Graham>radio stations, we wanna give you the phone numbers. <v Jerry Graham>Now, these phone numbers are here for a purpose. <v Jerry Graham>This entire day is to raise money for earthquake relief. <v Jerry Graham>So we want you to you to go to your phones. <v Jerry Graham>In uh the 415 area code the phone number is 864-2949. <v Jerry Graham>And out of the Bay Area, 1800-872-7311. <v Jerry Graham>Pledge 100 dollars, pledge f- uh [laughs] donate 100, donate 50. <v Jerry Graham>This isn't a pledge. This is a contribution. <v Barbara Rogers>Yes. <v Jerry Graham>This is your way of saying, look, I'm in. <v Jerry Graham>I join with you. I wanna help. <v Jerry Graham>And we'll accept your uh Visa or MasterCard. <v Barbara Rogers>That's right. And we should say that everyone who contributes 30 dollars or more gets one <v Barbara Rogers>of these wonderful tee shirts here. <v Barbara Rogers>Let's hold this up so they can see it. This is the earthquake relief, the official <v Barbara Rogers>earthquake relief T-shirt. <v Jerry Graham>Absolutely- <v Barbara Rogers>Says uh ?inaudible? down at the bottom of the slogan, it's everybody's fault, uh meaning <v Barbara Rogers>we're ?inaudible? we're all in this together. <v Barbara Rogers>And then on the back, of course, it gives the date. And uh Bill Graham and KQED presents
<v Barbara Rogers>the concert for earthquake relief. <v Barbara Rogers>And this is something you'll get for 30 dollars or more. <v Barbara Rogers>[phones ringing] <v Jerry Graham>Now we are ready to rejoin Bonnie Raitt, who's doing a wonderful set <v Jerry Graham>at in Oakland at the Kaiser Auditorium. <v Jerry Graham>We'll be back later. Bonnie. <v Bonnie Raitt>[performing] <v Bonnie Raitt>[applause] Yeah! I got a Wilson Pickett song I wanna sing for Bill Graham.
<v Bonnie Raitt>And thank him for all the work he's done to put this on. <v Bonnie Raitt>[music plays] Ooh I've been waitin' to be off this early in the Bay Area for a long time.
<v Bonnie Raitt>I got plans! [sporadic drumbeats] To do the kind of ?shakin'? I like tonight. <v Bonnie Raitt>Here's one of Johnny Lee's tunes. [music plays] <v Barbara Rogers>Well, we can tell the people there were having a very good time.
<v Barbara Rogers>That was Bonnie Raitt entertaining people at the Cow Palace, right? <v Jerry Graham>Uh Henry Kaiser Auditorium- <v Barbara Rogers>Henry Kaiser. I can't I have to get them all straight as to where everybody is, but that <v Barbara Rogers>everybody there was having a very good time. And we are here to um ask you to make some <v Barbara Rogers>donations to help earthquake relie- help the earthquake relief effort and help the <v Barbara Rogers>victims of the earthquake. <v Jerry Graham>Absolutely. We should also tell you that coming up next, a special surprise guest, Bob <v Jerry Graham>Hope. Mr. Rock and Roll. [laughs] Bob Hope is going to be making an appearance at the Cow <v Jerry Graham>Palace. And he really he flew up here on his own time from Palm Springs just <v Jerry Graham>to be part of it. And I guess that's sort of a clue for us again to welcome all of you <v Jerry Graham>from southern California who have joined us. <v Jerry Graham>And what this is all about, this is a day long effort, a monumental <v Jerry Graham>series of concerts put on by concert promoter Bill Graham to raise money <v Jerry Graham>for earthquake relief. Now, this is where we ask you to <v Jerry Graham>help. This is where we ask you to go to your phone and call in your <v Jerry Graham>supo- support, call in your contribution. <v Barbara Rogers>And I'll give those numbers again-
<v Jerry Graham>OK- <v Barbara Rogers>So that they can call, if you're in the 415 area code it's 8642949. <v Barbara Rogers>And otherwise, you can call 1800-872-7311. <v Barbara Rogers>And we would like you to call in, we'd like to hear all of those phones ringing back <v Barbara Rogers>there. <v Jerry Graham>Now, I don't I don't know about you, Barbara. By the way, my name's Jerry Graham, this is <v Jerry Graham>Barbara Rogers. I don't know about you, but in my house, <v Jerry Graham>we were spared the devastation that hit so much of the Bay Area- <v Barbara Rogers>Yes, me too. <v Jerry Graham>But one thing we have not been spared, and that is and this is a bit of a switch: holiday <v Jerry Graham>shopping lists. We have all been sitting with the catalogs that flood in through <v Jerry Graham>the mail, figuring out where we will spend our money. <v Jerry Graham>And sometimes holiday shopping list is a great event and sometimes maybe <v Jerry Graham>it feels like a chore. Well, think. <v Jerry Graham>What better gift could you give than to go to the phone right now and help <v Jerry Graham>people who really need your gift, help people who really need <v Jerry Graham>your support. Go to the phone and call.
<v Jerry Graham>Donate 100 dollars. Donate 50 dollars, donate whatever you can. <v Jerry Graham>You can charge it on your Visa or MasterCard. <v Jerry Graham>And keep in mind, whatever you donate is going to go for double <v Jerry Graham>because promoter Bill Graham is matching everything up to a million <v Jerry Graham>dollars. So if you call in and say, OK, I'm in for 100 dollars, <v Jerry Graham>that means 200 dollars. If you say I'm in for 50 dollars, you have just <v Jerry Graham>contributed 100 dollars to the cause. <v Barbara Rogers>And let's talk a little bit about where some of that money will go those contributions <v Barbara Rogers>are going to be divided equally among the Red Cross, the mayors emergency <v Barbara Rogers>relief fund in San Francisco, the San Jose mayor's earthquake relief fund, the <v Barbara Rogers>Oakland Mayors Earthquake Relief Fund, the city of Watsonville Earthquake Relief Fund, <v Barbara Rogers>and the mayor's emergency fund in Santa Cruz and as you're looking at your screen, you <v Barbara Rogers>just saw some of the scenes of the devastation from those various places. <v Barbara Rogers>So you know why that money is needed. There was extensive damage. <v Barbara Rogers>Billions of dollars worth of damage throughout California in those places.
<v Barbara Rogers>So, uh you know that that money is needed. <v Jerry Graham>And for everyone who donates 30 dollars or more. <v Jerry Graham>This is your T-shirt, [laughs] actually. <v Jerry Graham>You'll get your own copy. And it says this wonderful line, earthquake relief. <v Jerry Graham>It's everybody's fault. <v Jerry Graham>And it is no matter where you live. <v Jerry Graham>California, Missouri, anywhere. <v Jerry Graham>Earthquakes could happen. And when they happen, then those people who have <v Jerry Graham>been hit badly need help. <v Jerry Graham>That's what this is all about. It's an evening now from now until midnight. <v Jerry Graham>I'm seeing some of the greatest names in music perform all <v Jerry Graham>donated time. Everyone involved in this production is doing it for <v Jerry Graham>free. That includes the musicians, the promoters. <v Barbara Rogers>More than 50 different acts. And they're all coming together. <v Barbara Rogers>That's an incredible thing. I mean, in and of itself, they had all those people together <v Barbara Rogers>on one night donating their time. <v Barbara Rogers>And you can help out by donating too. They're donating their time to entertain you. <v Barbara Rogers>You can donate some money to help the earthquake relief victims.
<v Jerry Graham>Behind us you can see there are people who have donated their Sunday night to <v Jerry Graham>answer your phone calls. So please, those phone numbers once again, if <v Jerry Graham>you're listening on radio, you can't see the people, but believe me, they are there. <v Jerry Graham>The numbers in the Bay Area, 4158642949. <v Jerry Graham>Out of the Bay Area, <v Jerry Graham>particularly those of you in Southern California. <v Jerry Graham>1800-872-7311. <v Jerry Graham>We want to hear from you. We hope to hear from you. <v Barbara Rogers>Now Jerry has already mentioned that um Bill Graham will match those grants up <v Barbara Rogers>to a million dollars, up to a million dollars. <v Barbara Rogers>He's going to be matching those contributions. ?inaudible?- <v Jerry Graham>We've got about 450,000 dollars. <v Jerry Graham>So far, we wanna hit a million tonight right here. <v Barbara Rogers>And Willie Brown, who is the speaker of the California Assembly, has also said that <v Barbara Rogers>he will match donations up to 50,000 dollars from his campaign <v Barbara Rogers>contributions fund. If other politicians will call in and pledge to do the same <v Barbara Rogers>thing to take money from their campaign funds to match those donations.
<v Jerry Graham>So let me just tell you who you're going to be hearing from and seeing later on tonight. <v Jerry Graham>As I said, we're going to see Bob Hope soon. <v Jerry Graham>We are also going to uh be hearing from Crosby, Stills and <v Jerry Graham>Nash. We're going to be hearing from John Fogerty, Neil Young, Steve Miller, <v Jerry Graham>who knows when it comes around to finale time who will join the stage? <v Jerry Graham>We also wanna talk about, you know, we've been getting a lot of calls from various <v Jerry Graham>companies- <v Barbara Rogers>Yeah I've got some right here- <v Jerry Graham>Who are challenging people in similar companies saying, look, I raise 100 dollars <v Jerry Graham>now. How about you? Match me. Barbara you have ?inaudible? <v Barbara Rogers>Here's some of the ones who have called in with a challenge. <v Barbara Rogers>The workers of the Concord Pavilion, they are saying if they if you will call in <v Barbara Rogers>and and match this uh matchin' amount, they will also give that amount. <v Barbara Rogers>Challenges uh from the Pay Less Drugs at 51st Street in Oakland <v Barbara Rogers>and fellow employees of ?Ketco? <v Barbara Rogers>Auto Parts. <v Jerry Graham>Okay, I have a couple, too. We have uh Keith Cavaleiro challenges firefighters <v Jerry Graham>at Mount ?Tamopius?
<v Jerry Graham>firehouse, his fellow firefighters. <v Jerry Graham>Come on, let's hear it. <v Jerry Graham>Star Reporting challenges other court reporting services, bookstores challenging other <v Jerry Graham>bookstores. Here's a 1000 dollar challenge. <v Jerry Graham>This is from the Clinton Village Convalescent Hospital, and they're challenging other <v Jerry Graham>nursing homes and also David Minniti at Livermore Auto Exchange <v Jerry Graham>challenges other auto dealers. So get on the phone, call your friends, tell 'em <v Jerry Graham>hey, do you know what's on Channel Nine right now? <v Jerry Graham>We're challenging. We're gonna raise over a million dollars and Bill Graham's gonna match <v Jerry Graham>it. <v Barbara Rogers>And here's some others from Sam Bishop at Children's Hospital in San Francisco. <v Barbara Rogers>He challenges all the other workers there to uh call in and make a donation. <v Barbara Rogers>Guy Gilcrest photography challenges all other photographers out there to call in and make <v Barbara Rogers>a donation. And John, um let's see. <v Barbara Rogers>This is all of Mill Valley. <v Barbara Rogers>The whole city [Jerry: everybody] of Mill Valley he's asking everybody in Mill Valley to <v Barbara Rogers>call in and meet his challenge and to make a donation. <v Jerry Graham>I I think it's worth repeating exactly where this money goes. <v Jerry Graham>Uh Barbara did tell you, but it's going to be divided equally in six
<v Jerry Graham>ways between the Red Cross and then the mayor's emergency <v Jerry Graham>relief funds of some of the cities hit hardest. <v Jerry Graham>That would be San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, which was <v Jerry Graham>not hit, but is helping out its neighbors. <v Jerry Graham>Uh the city of Watsonville Relief Fund and the mayors relief fund in Santa Cruz. <v Jerry Graham>All of those areas very hard hit. <v Jerry Graham>But the thing about it is we are there now. <v Jerry Graham>Everybody came together right after the earthquake. <v Jerry Graham>Everyone is still coming together 5,6 weeks after it to help. <v Jerry Graham>All right. We're going to go to Bill Graham now, who is introducing Bob Hope. <v Jerry Graham>[cheering] <v Bill Graham>On behalf of all the people that have worked on this event- all <v Bill Graham>the limo drivers, all the stagehands, all the musicians, all the hotels that gave us <v Bill Graham>rooms, all the airlines, all the sound companies, all the truck companies,
<v Bill Graham>everybody involved with all three shows today, they are all <v Bill Graham>volunteers for the same cause [cheering]. <v Bill Graham>And we also wanna let you know that there isn't a single musician in northern <v Bill Graham>California that said no. <v Bill Graham>Everyone said we're in [cheering]. <v Bill Graham>Also yesterday poured down in Watsonville, but today the sun was out gloriously <v Bill Graham>and for one day they had peace and joy and great music. <v Bill Graham>[cheering] The <v Bill Graham>the extent of this expression of concern for our neighbors <v Bill Graham>down south and to the north goes very deep for a <v Bill Graham>lot of the entertainers.
<v Bill Graham>A few days ago, we made contact with an artist who <v Bill Graham>was very concerned and wasn't sure that he could make the schedule. <v Bill Graham>He called last night and said, I'm in. <v Bill Graham>Where do you want me? [cheering] An <v Bill Graham>extended expression of what it's like to be a Californian, Mr. Bob Hope. <v Bill Graham>[cheering] <v Bob Hope>[continuous cheering] Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you very much. I think- let me tell ya. I
<v Bob Hope>think this is the most marvelous thing what you people are doing. <v Bob Hope>When I- I ?met?- [audio and video turn off] [program rewinds]

Description
Program Description
"(The accompanying video tapes are two consecutive hours of a thirteen hour telethon. The performances here are: Bonnie Raitt; Eddie Money; Bob Hope; Crosby, Stills & Nash; and John Fogerty.) "EARTHQUAKE RELIEF CONCERT "San Francisco Bay Area musicians are legendary for dedicating themselves to good works and donating their time and performances to charitable causes. When their own community was hit by the earthquake of October 17, 1989, the call went out again. They responded without hesitation. Organized by concert promoter Bill Graham, some fifty music and comedy acts performed on November 26, 1989, at three separate concert venues in Watsonville, San Francisco, and Oakland. "As part of the endeavor from the start, public broadcasting station, KQED, secured a special FCC waiver and committed thirteen hours of continuous airtime and its pledge drive systems to the telethon, broadcasting the live concerts and the accompanying appeal for earthquake relief donations. "In a remarkable effort, KQED, a public television station which ordinarily does no more than two remote multicamera productions a year, created a television network with: three remote production sites, anchor studio, twenty two cameras, and satellite linkage. All within three weeks time. "It is estimated that more than 1000 people volunteered their time and/or services to the concert and broadcast. Many broadcast announcers from the local network affiliates and local radio stations joined the production as studio anchors. The program was distributed live to ten television stations and ten radio stations statewide, expanding the appeal for donations throughout most of California. "Among the musical groups that volunteered were Los Lobos; Santana; Crosby, Stills, & Nash; Bonnie Raitt; John Fogerty; Neil Young; America; Eddie Money; Steve Miller; and Jessie Colin Young. Bob Hope made a special appearance for the cause. "By the end of the day two million dollars were raised for the relief fund."--1989 Peabody Awards entry form.
