<v Jerry Graham>[audio and video stops] [audio is muffled then comes in] 5, 6 weeks after it to help. <v Jerry Graham>All right, we're going to go to Bill Graham now, who is introducing Bob Hope. <v Bill Graham>On behalf of all the people that have worked on this event- all <v Bill Graham>the limo drivers, all the stagehands, all the musicians, all the hotels that gave us <v Bill Graham>rooms, all the airlines, all the sound companies, all the truck companies, <v Bill Graham>everybody involved with all three shows today, they're all <v Bill Graham>volunteers for the same coin. <v Bill Graham>And we also want to let you know that there isn't a single musician in northern <v Bill Graham>California that said no. <v Bill Graham>Everyone said we're in. <v Bill Graham>And also yesterday it poured down in Watsonville, but today
<v Bill Graham>the sun was out gloriously and for one day they had peace <v Bill Graham>and joy and great music. [cheering] The <v Bill Graham>the extent of this expression of concern for our neighbors <v Bill Graham>down south and to the north goes very deep for a lot <v Bill Graham>of the entertainers. <v Bill Graham>A few days ago, we made contact with an artist who <v Bill Graham>was very concerned and wasn't sure that you could make the schedule. <v Bill Graham>He called last night and said, I'm in, where do you want me? <v Bill Graham>An extended expression of what is like to be a Californian, Mr. Bob Hope. <v Bill Graham>[cheering] <v Bob Hope>[continuous cheering] Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you very much.
<v Bob Hope>I think- let me tell ya. I think this is the most marvelous thing that <v Bob Hope>you people are doing. [cheering] I really do. I do.
<v Bob Hope>When I I met so many acts back here, rock acts <v Bob Hope>that I don't know. <v Bob Hope>But let me tell you, I think it's the most marvelous thing- this <v Bob Hope>mass effort you're doing to help this cause, that's all I wanna tell you. <v Bob Hope>?inaudible? I know, I know what it means. <v Bob Hope>I think we people, I think we people in California. <v Bob Hope>I mean, we're used to this because we had we had an earthquake down <v Bob Hope>in L.A. 1971. <v Bob Hope>But I'll tell you, it was really something. <v Bob Hope>I was- it was really something. I got up and ran around the house and <v Bob Hope>the house got up and ran around me [cheering]. <v Bob Hope>And it's uh- what this means- what
<v Bob Hope>this means to the people this mass effort, your people must <v Bob Hope>you must have a smile on your heart tonight when you go to bed, I tell ya that. <v Bob Hope>They had me- this is the 4th show I've done. <v Bob Hope>Tonight, I flew up here [laughs]. <v Bob Hope>I <v Bob Hope>just I just came I just came <v Bob Hope>from the Kaiser auditorium over there in Oakland <v Bob Hope>and they got a great group over there, beautiful group. <v Bob Hope>And I'll tell ya, just being here with you- just being <v Bob Hope>here with you makes me feel a hell of a lot younger, I'll tell ya. <v Bob Hope>Let me tell you one thing.
<v Bob Hope>Let me tell you one thing. <v Bob Hope>Age. Age doesn't mean a damn thing. <v Bob Hope>It really doesn't. When I wake up in the morning, I don't feel my age. <v Bob Hope>In fact, I don't feel anything till noon. <v Bob Hope>Then it's time for my nap [laughs]. No but it's just just <v Bob Hope>wonderful being here in the- I flew up. <v Bob Hope>I fly everywhere, of course. <v Bob Hope>I It doesn't bother me. <v Bob Hope>Flying doesn't bother- yeah, yeah. <v Bob Hope>It's pretty hard to talk you know, you're just so busy taking bows aren't ya? <v Bob Hope>Flying doesn't bother me. I always carry tranquilizers. <v Bob Hope>Course some uh some of the stewardesses won't take 'em, but it's nice anyway. <v Bob Hope>I just wanna tell you that it's just just a great delight, and I'm on
<v Bob Hope>my way to Palm Springs to get ready for our golf tournament down there. <v Bob Hope>And that's that's my regular business. <v Bob Hope>Golf is my regular- this is just the sideline till the tee opens up. <v Bob Hope>Yes, indeed. <v Bob Hope>But let me say one thing. <v Bob Hope>?He's? doing fine and we'll be playing we'll be playing in fact, I took <v Bob Hope>Nathaniel Crosby over to Japan and Taiwan <v Bob Hope>and Malaysia and Hong Kong, and they loved him over there. <v Bob Hope>He won the amateur in 1981. <v Bob Hope>And I'll tell ya, he they just loved Nathaniel Crosby and uh he was sort <v Bob Hope>of a delight to 'em over there. <v Bob Hope>I just wanna tell ya one thing. <v Bob Hope>I just wanna tell ya one thing that you couldn't- you couldn't be in a <v Bob Hope>better place tonight. I know half of you've been here all day.
<v Bob Hope>But you look awful great to me. You look awful wonderful to me, all of ya. <v Bob Hope>And it's just a great, great thrill being here. <v Bob Hope>Thank you very, very much. [cheering] <v Bill Graham>Let's make sure he hears you. Once again, Bob Hope.
<v Bill Graham>[screaming] You <v Bill Graham>can only follow a great act with a great act. <v Bill Graham>I don't know of any group of musicians who were there more for <v Bill Graham>the people of California than these guys. <v Bill Graham>Crosby, Stills, Nash [screaming]. <v Man 1>How are you doing!
<v Man 2>Hello! <v Man 3>Howdy! <v Man 1>How're y'all doing? <v Man 1>Hope and Crosby, Hope and Crosby and you know what I- <v Man 1>there's hope for Crosby. [singing] Thanks <v Man 1>for coming, everybody! [cheering]
<v Man 1>[singing] <v Man 1>All right.
<v Man 1>This is a song about a 20 year love affair with a sailboat. <v Man 1>[cheering] [singing] <v Jerry Graham>All right. Crosby, Stills and Nash we'll be joining them again a little later and
<v Jerry Graham>in about a minute we're going to go to Oakland to join John Fogerty. <v Barbara Rogers>Now, all of these acts've been performing tonight absolutely free. <v Barbara Rogers>They're donating their time. And there's a way you can get into the act, too. <v Barbara Rogers>You can donate a contribution to the earthquake relief fund by calling either one of <v Barbara Rogers>these numbers. If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area it's 415-864-2949 <v Barbara Rogers>or outside the San Francisco Bay Area or outside the 415 area code, 1-800-872-7311. <v Barbara Rogers>And already we have over 500,000 dollars that has been donated today. <v Barbara Rogers>Each one of those dollars, up to a million dollars is being matched by Bill Graham. <v Barbara Rogers>So you still have more money to put into that fund to get all those matching dollars from <v Barbara Rogers>Bill Graham. Isn't that great? <v Jerry Graham>It's great. We're going to double it. I should mention real quickly, donate 100 <v Jerry Graham>dollars, 50. For every donation of 30 dollars or more, you get your own <v Jerry Graham>T-shirt, you'll wear this with pride. <v Jerry Graham>Earthquake relief. It's everybody's fault. <v Jerry Graham>And feel free to charge it with your Visa or MasterCard. <v Jerry Graham>So we want to hear from you.
<v Barbara Rogers>That's right. <v Jerry Graham>And we wanna hear from you real soon. <v Barbara Rogers>Make all of those phones ring because you wanna be a part of this. <v Barbara Rogers>You don't want anybody to say years from now, gee, did you give something to the <v Barbara Rogers>earthquake relief fund? And you say, no, you wanna be a part of this special day today. <v Jerry Graham>Now, as we mentioned, John Fogerty has begun his set. <v Jerry Graham>We're going to join him now at the Henry Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland. <v John Fogerty>[cheering] Thank you! <v John Fogerty>I swear that guy had pants on when he showed up. <v John Fogerty>[laughing] ?inaudible? <v John Fogerty>these guys who uh so graciously also volunteered their time. <v John Fogerty>I mean I called up and said, would you do this? <v John Fogerty>And they all ?said? right now. This is Randy Jackson on the bass. <v John Fogerty>Danny Kortchmar on guitar ?inaudible?. <v John Fogerty>Mr. Steve <v John Fogerty>Jordan on drums. [applause] [music plays] [singing]
<v John Fogerty>Oh! Anybody get hurt over there?
<v John Fogerty>[applause] Hey, just yell 'em out we'll do 'em. Yeah. <v John Fogerty>What is it, go ?49? [plays guitar] <v John Fogerty>Thank you! Before I get all preoccupied with notes of chords and all that, I wanna thank
<v John Fogerty>you all for coming out and being part of this, because that was the whole idea in the <v John Fogerty>first place. Give yourself a great big hand. <v John Fogerty>Thank you. <v John Fogerty>I'm sure everybody's got a story about where they were when the big one happened. <v John Fogerty>?But? I was out at the ballpark where all the sensible people should be. <v John Fogerty>[music plays] <v John Fogerty>Thank you! [video and audio pause momentarily] [singing]
<v Barbara Rogers>?inaudible? Ah that's great. That was John Fogerty at the in Oakland at the Henry J.
<v Barbara Rogers>Kaiser Center. And we're gonna be going back to more John Fogarty, along with Bonnie <v Barbara Rogers>Raitt, who's going to be joining him for his encore. <v Barbara Rogers>And we're also going to get some more of Crosby, Stills and Nash so you don't want to go <v Barbara Rogers>away. But you do want to go to your phone for just about a minute, right? <v Jerry Graham>Absolutely. In fact, uh what you oughta do is <v Jerry Graham>take a look at, oh, we're getting it wrapped up. <v Jerry Graham>We have to go now. Barbara, ?inaudible? <v Jerry Graham>[inaudible speaking] <v Barbara Rogers>I've gotta go back to work. <v Jerry Graham>OK. We're gonna join Crosby, Stills and Nash at the Cow Palace. <v Jerry Graham>I think they have a special guest. Thanks, Barbara. <v Jerry Graham>[applause] [music plays] <v Crosby, Stills, and Nash>[singing] ?inaudible? everybody! Thank you!
<v Jerry Graham>
<v Jerry Graham>All right. That's Crosby, Stills and Nash, joined by special guest Paul Kantner <v Jerry Graham>of the Jefferson Airplane. That's why we rushed back to there. <v Jerry Graham>We're going to rush back now to John Fogerty in Oakland. <v Jerry Graham>He's going to be joined for his encore by Bonnie Raitt, [phone ringing] but don't forget <v Jerry Graham>to call, call and donate. <v Jerry Graham>OK. <v Bonnie Raitt and John Fogerty>[singing] [music playing] <v John Fogerty>Thank you and bless you. [cheering] Goodnight!
<v Jerry Graham>Take a deep breath, we're playing musical ping pong. <v Jerry Graham>That's John Fogerty and Bonnie Raitt in Oakland. <v Jerry Graham>Now we're going back to San Francisco for Crosby, Stills, Nash and <v Jerry Graham>maybe still Kantner. Don't forget to call. <v Crosby, Stills, and Nash>[singing] Steven Still! [cheering] [singing]
<v Crosby, Stills, and Nash>Steven Still ladies and gentlemen! [cheering] Okay we'll do one but you have to sing it with us.
<v Crosby, Stills, and Nash>Maybe uh- [begins song] [singing]
<v Crosby, Stills, and Nash>Thank you everybody! That's for ?Jackson and Willy and ?inaudible?? ! [cheering]
<v Jerry Graham>I think ?that? got 'em, maybe they got you.
<v Jerry Graham>Crosby, Stills and Nash. <v Jerry Graham>Now where are we in this point of the program? <v Jerry Graham>We still have a lot of music to go. <v Jerry Graham>In a little bit we're going to go back and show you a John Fogerty number that we taped <v Jerry Graham>because we couldn't show it to you live. We're going to bring you that. <v Jerry Graham>And then setting up on that stage where Crosby, Stills and Nash just <v Jerry Graham>completed their set, Aaron Neville of the fabulous Neville Brothers of New Orleans. <v Jerry Graham>So we have some very exciting music coming up. <v Jerry Graham>Right now, though, we're going to pay for all of this in a way. <v Jerry Graham>We're first going to say hello though to Ginger Casey- <v Ginger Casey>That's making them pay [laughs]. <v Jerry Graham>No, no, no that's the easy part. G- Ginger Casey of KQED, who started at noon. <v Jerry Graham>I saw you. <v Ginger Casey>That's right. <v Jerry Graham>Today I- <v Ginger Casey>That's right. They couldn't keep me away. <v Jerry Graham>Well, I'm glad. You're going to stay with us. <v Jerry Graham>We're going to stay until midnight or [Ginger Casey: That's right] whenever this show <v Jerry Graham>ends. Right? <v Ginger Casey>It's really been a phenomenal day. Not only the outpouring of the artistic talent, but <v Ginger Casey>the hundreds of people who have volunteered their time to make today's broadcast <v Ginger Casey>possible. And it's all about neighbors helping neighbors. <v Ginger Casey>Everybody's coming in and giving of their time just so we can help out some of the
<v Ginger Casey>thousands of folks who are devastated by the earthquake in our area. <v Ginger Casey>And all the money we're raising is staying in the Bay Area. <v Ginger Casey>23,000 housing units alone were impacted by that quake. <v Ginger Casey>And they need the money. They need the help. <v Ginger Casey>Of course, we're being watched now in southern California. <v Ginger Casey>And I'm hoping that some of the people I've worked with down in that market will also dig <v Ginger Casey>in and help some of the people up here dig out. <v Jerry Graham>I can hear them calling now. For southern California the phone number is 1800-872-7311. <v Jerry Graham>That's the phone number. Wherever you are out of the Bay Area, we'll take your Visa. <v Jerry Graham>We'll take your MasterCard. We wanna hear from you. <v Jerry Graham>Show us, show us your support for the people who were really <v Jerry Graham>hit hardest and and are still trying to recover from the earthquake. <v Jerry Graham>By the way, in the Bay Area the phone number is 415- <v Jerry Graham>864- 2949. <v Jerry Graham>Now so far we have raised over 600,000 dollars. <v Jerry Graham>I should say you have contributed over 600,000
<v Jerry Graham>dollars. And you know what that means a ?million two? <v Jerry Graham>goes to earthquake relief- <v Ginger Casey>That's right- <v Jerry Graham>Because all- [audio and video cut out] [video rewinds]

Description
Program Description
"(The accompanying video tapes are two consecutive hours of a thirteen hour telethon. The performances here are: Bonnie Raitt; Eddie Money; Bob Hope; Crosby, Stills & Nash; and John Fogerty.) "EARTHQUAKE RELIEF CONCERT "San Francisco Bay Area musicians are legendary for dedicating themselves to good works and donating their time and performances to charitable causes. When their own community was hit by the earthquake of October 17, 1989, the call went out again. They responded without hesitation. Organized by concert promoter Bill Graham, some fifty music and comedy acts performed on November 26, 1989, at three separate concert venues in Watsonville, San Francisco, and Oakland. "As part of the endeavor from the start, public broadcasting station, KQED, secured a special FCC waiver and committed thirteen hours of continuous airtime and its pledge drive systems to the telethon, broadcasting the live concerts and the accompanying appeal for earthquake relief donations. "In a remarkable effort, KQED, a public television station which ordinarily does no more than two remote multicamera productions a year, created a television network with: three remote production sites, anchor studio, twenty two cameras, and satellite linkage. All within three weeks time. "It is estimated that more than 1000 people volunteered their time and/or services to the concert and broadcast. Many broadcast announcers from the local network affiliates and local radio stations joined the production as studio anchors. The program was distributed live to ten television stations and ten radio stations statewide, expanding the appeal for donations throughout most of California. "Among the musical groups that volunteered were Los Lobos; Santana; Crosby, Stills, & Nash; Bonnie Raitt; John Fogerty; Neil Young; America; Eddie Money; Steve Miller; and Jessie Colin Young. Bob Hope made a special appearance for the cause. "By the end of the day two million dollars were raised for the relief fund."--1989 Peabody Awards entry form.
