Jack, joined here in the studio by the meet purveyors, welcome to KEXB. Thank you, sir. Absolutely. Can you introduce yourselves for our listening audience? I'm Joe. I sing. I'm Cherylin. I am Bill. The class of good training guitar player. I'm Peter. I play mandolin. Welcome all to the station and you're playing tonight at the tractor along with Danny Barnes and the Tennessee twin music starts around 930. Didn't you play last weekend in Ballard as well? Yes, sir. We're just a Ballard kind of band. Hey, that's great. That's fine with us. They have good drinks there. Oh, so I hear. We enjoy alcohol. I see. Well, many people do in Ballard. We drink. We have problems. Let's talk more about those later. How about starting out with a song? I will do it. Me purveyors here. And then we're shining through the trees. And the wind was whistling low.
I came upon a fork in the road. I didn't know which way to go. I hit a gravestone with my knee. And fell upon the ground. I came upon a fork in the road. I didn't know which way to go. I hit a gravestone with my knee. And fell upon the ground. There was something swaying in the breeze. But if it did not make a sound. Don't look at the hangman. Don't look at the hangman. Don't look at the hangman. Don't look at the hangman. Don't look at the hangman. Don't look at the hangman. Don't look at the hangman. Don't look in the hand, man! The gypsy woman read my cards
And she took my 20 bucks A gypsy woman read my cards And she took my 20 bucks She said, you ain't got no future girl No, your future's all your stuff Don't look in the hand, man! Don't look in the hand, man! Don't look in the hand, man! Don't look in the hand, man! I did your spotty in the woods and I took off running south They found me down in eagle pass with pasteoo in my mouth
Don't look at the hangman, don't look at the hangman Don't look at the hangman, don't look at the hangman Don't look at the hangman Don't look at the hangman, don't look at the hangman And don't look in the hang pen, no look in the hang pen! Don't look in the hang pen, don't look in the hang pen, don't look in the hang pen, We're the Music Matters, 90.3, K-E-X-P. The Meet purveyors live here in the performance studio. They're also in town tonight at the tractor. Music starting around 9.30 with Danny Barnes and the Tennessee Twin. What's the name of that one? That is called Hanged Man. Hanged Man.
Or don't look at the Hanged Man. Or the Will Hanged Man. Good. I thought you were saying Hanged Nail, so thank you. But that would be stupid. That would be stupid. That would be stupid. That would be stupid than what it already is. I see. Where's home for you all? We're from Austin. Austin. Do you need an address or just city? Texas, just say Texas. We can't divulge that information. I see. I see. There's some stalking problems. But that was us actually doing this stalking. All right. You're safe now, both wise. You're in a lock to security building here. And you all live in Austin or in Texas? Yes. I'm the native Texan of us. Really? The rest of us are merely locals. Is that like an issue when you're living there? Do people call you out on that? No. If you're not native. No one's been made in here. Nobody can call me out over nothing. I'm going to taxpayer for a long time. I'm originally from New York City. So there's a common hatred of Californians between the Texans and the New Yorkers.
So you know, common grounds. That's what's on that. So what side do you get on? It just depends on the battle. The common hatred of Californians? Oh, Californians. I thought you might be between New York and Texas. OK. And I am a Californian sometimes. Let's see. Let's do it. Amazing. How did all of you from the different sections of the country come together and start playing music together? Jesus. Well, there was this at the paper. It was a wait. It wasn't that. I was young. I needed the money. He didn't know he was. He said he loved me. He said he loved me. Was it just the four of you? Or was there ever an hour? There was actually a fifth. There was a girl that actually helped start the band. She got me into it. Yeah. And she kind of faded away. So to speak. Screaming at the top of her line. Was she a Californian? She quit herself. She did. She wasn't ousted. Yeah. She wasn't ousted. There was no power play.
I see. What instrument did she play when she was... She played banjo. She was really, really good. Really. But she was unstable. She was unstable. So no recordings that survived of that. Yeah, there might be actually some rough crude recordings made in the field. Yeah. And Eleanor Max was out there. They might be around somewhere. We could dig around. But to what end? It's OK. We can talk about that later. Let me stupid. Let me stupid again. That's where I'm going. And originally you were known as the Texas meat purveyors. Yes. Yes. And what happened to Texas? More legal issues. Yeah. It's every straining order. We can't discuss it. It's despawned. I don't understand how this. Yeah. There's a place in Texas. There's a company called Texas meat purveyors. Oh, oh, I see. OK. I don't know. They didn't want to be represented by us. I can't imagine why. I can't imagine why either. They could have been so great. You could have done their jingles. Right.
I know. Perfect. Where the meat purveyors from the Lone Star stay. There it is. It's gold, baby. Gold. Now you see why they didn't want us to represent them. I see. Is Austin a good town to be a musician in? It's really hot. It's so hot. Oh, my God. It's a good town to start a band in. But not a good town to have a band in. Does that make sense? No. You can't really make any money, but it's like an Austin. And it's really hard to get out of there. It takes 10 hours. No matter where you go, whatever direction it takes all the place. Yeah. But it's good to start just because there's a lot of musicians around. I heard something about a noise ordinance down there. We don't make that much noise. Not a problem. It doesn't concern us. Well, now Joe just keeps her a better window close now. Oh, nice. How about another song? Yes. This is really a really capital idea.
Let's do 2 a.m. Off the new record. Meet purveyors at K-X-P. OK. I got a stale bowl of beer nuts. Some old cigarette butts. All I can show for my day. Just warming this bar stool. Talking in a damn pool. Watching the hours melt away. And I know I shouldn't call him in the shape that I'm in. It's 2 a.m. already again. Life in a beer glass.
Thinking about days past. It's no way to pass by your time. I shouldn't pick up a phone. When I'm drinking alone. Because my mind plays tricks when I'm high. So one more shot of whiskey. And for the room starts to spin. It's 2 a.m. already again. And I wake up tomorrow. Feel it like sin.
It's 2 a.m. already again. On 90.3 K-E-X-P. The meat purveyors live here at the station. Also play in live tonight in Ballard for the second straight weekend. 2 a.m. the name of the tune from is it off the new album? Yes. And let's talk a little bit about the album which is called all relationships are doomed to fail. Yes. Continue a great run of album titles by the way. As far as making the album. Now I know you guys took a break. Yes. How do you call that break? We call that a permanent breakup that was somehow miraculously reversed. It was a painful extraction. Really.
Mistakes were made. Yeah. How long did that last? Two years. Yeah. Two years between performances. Is that right? Deeply therapeutic. Two years. Wow. I bet. Spiritual cleansing happening. Was it really good to play together once it started happening again? Violently pleasurable. Indescribable sensations. It took me a little while. It took us a while to get up to speed. That's why we took us about three or four months to be able to then record and then do a show. It was still getting our muscles back. I don't even know if we have them yet. The chops-wise are just the chemistry between... Oh, no. The chemistry is just as bad as it always was. I see. How did the album go? Making it. Does it get easier after a few albums? Oh, yeah. Yeah. It's really easy. Yeah. Perfect. And we're quick. Yeah. What does Sonically Superior to the Varsity I believe? It really is.
Good to know. I quit. The songwriting department, that is Bill and Pete. Yeah. Pete wrote that last one. Really nice. Yeah. I'm still learning how to play it apparently, but he can write it. He just can't play it. There you go. Do you guys work together? Or do you always write separately? It's separate. I mean, Pete has a couple songs on this record. I have five on this record. And he's doing more and more. But we never write together any of us, really. Yeah. And you sometimes will pitch them each other's stuff. It's very painful too. That way you can tell spending more time together. I see. Yeah. So you then bring the songs in and just bring them in. And then we play them in. Everyone doesn't like them. And we have to beg them to do it. And then finally, when we do it, they grudgingly accept the songs. That's about how it works. Sounds like the worst thing. Oh, it's you're the one that I'm always saying. This song is terrible. I can't do this. I can't. And I won't. Until she's actually up on stage and people are cheering for her. She thinks it stinks.
Yeah. Well, somebody's got to be the critic, I guess. Now, you guys are also known for some amazing covers that range from Madonna, Elvis, Velvet Underground, Earl Haggard, and on the new album, Abba, and Rat. How do you choose your covers? Again, someone mentions it as an idea. And everyone says, no, that's terrible. And then we start playing it. And we fight about it. They have to be championed. They have to have a sponsor. Someone has to sponsor. They have to usher them into the fold and then defend them to that. As usually tears. Wow. Recrimination. No, you actually sounded like the rat one was a no brainer. That was really easy. I know. Nobody had thought of it. I mean, it was it was perfect. We're going to make those guys so much money. Absolutely. Dozens and dozens of dollars. Yeah, maybe we can party with this guy. I would totally party with rat. They totally party with rat. They totally party. Yeah.
I hope they're all sober. Please, Jesus, no. How about another song original or cover? Let's do a cover. I got an idea. You know, as soon as I play you'll know, it's really fast. Hey, will I know? Yes. Where is it? Okay. Originally, I know that. Can I tell me? Sorry for the dead space. Thank you. All right. Let me do that again. Now I can now remember it. What goes on in your mind? I think that I am falling down. What goes on in your mind? I think that I am falling down. What goes on in your mind? I think that I am falling down. What goes on in your mind? I think that I am falling down. Lady Bgood. If you were to shed, you know to work. All right. Lady Bgood. You would to shed, you know to be all right. I'm going up, and I'm going down. I'm going to firesoft side to side. See the bells up in the sky. Somebody kept their strength in two. Lady Bgood.
If you were to shed, you know to work. All right. Lady, be good, we went to show you gotta be all right We made it hard, we made it hard, we made it hard We made it hard, we made it hard We went to show you gotta be all right
Let's get close on in your mind I think I am holding down What goes on in your mind I think that I am upside down And lady, be good, you went to show you gotta work all right And lady, be good, be good, you went to show you the little</ye Lady, be good, do it and check, it's not a work all right. Lady, be good, do it and check, you're not a be all right. On 90.3, K-E-X-B, the meat purveyors and they're covered there of the velvet undergrouds. What goes on? You can see them tonight at the tractor, along with Danny Barnes and the Tennessee twin music starting around 9.30. Sounds great. If someone asks you, you're welcome. Someone asks you what you do and you say I'm in a band and they say what kind of music do you play?
Do you say bluegrass, crabgrass, crabgrass, crabgrass. That question gets a beating. See, I didn't ask it. I just said what if. See, that's why I made it hypothetical. Hypothetical world. Hypothetically, Shirley would kick your ass. Yeah. Yeah. We'll keep that as a hypothetically. She's real to. I mean, it sounds like bluegrass, but you don't necessarily deal with like real themes, like, you know, the mountain music of old. We're not good enough to be bluegrass. We're like, right. And we don't live in mountains, right? Absolutely. And there's just too much drinking. Yeah. You have to write that what you know. Drinking, drinking, killing, girls. Yeah. No, not. That sounds like bluegrass. No, it's just me. Just girls. Do you think the definition should be expanded of what bluegrass is? I mean, there's a lot of sort of no.
You don't want to be, you don't want to be included. Maybe shrunken back down to, you know, so that maybe Allison Kraus is no longer part of it. And perhaps Nickel Creek, they get left out of that. Yeah. No new grass. The bloody paste. Well, it was too. By God. Yeah, it needs to be shrunken. Yeah, shrunken. Yeah. If you do. I have no opinion. I don't want it to be shrunken just so that it's easier to tell someone what kind of music I play. That's for sure. You mean expanded? Yeah. Yeah. So you still want to be able to. No. No. Where's dude? The latest album is the third for you all for a bloodshot out of Chicago. Have you been pretty happy working with them overall? Yes. Of course. Get up, Peter. Actually, they work for us. Ah, it's a good way to look at it. Yeah. They actually are. Well, they're good. I can call them up and scream at them. Yeah.
Oh, yeah. They weren't in the posters at the club that we played in last night. That's true. Yeah. That would be repercussions. They're usually are. The ramifications will be great. Yes. We have had a lot of good press, which is you. They have good people there. To their people. Good interns. They probably don't pay. They're really good. Yeah. That's important at a label. Do you have one more song on you? And you really hope so. Can I get one up in you? Let's do that, Nick Lowe's song. Okay. You thought I was going to say Nickel Creek, right? No. I hope. A girl can dream. One, and two, and up. Without love, I am half human. Without love, I'm a machine. Without love, there's nothing to do. I will die without love. Without love, I am an island. I'll buy myself in a heartbreak scene.
Without love, there's nothing to die. I am dying without love. For there is nowhere I can run. And there is no high place. Seeking out like a sore thumb. By the gloomy look upon my face. Without love, I'm in complete. Without love, I am not home. Without love, I'm barely on my feet. I am dying without love. For there is nowhere I can run. And there is no high place.
Seeking out like a sore thumb. Without love, I'm in complete. Without love, I am not home. Without love, I'm barely on my feet. I am dying without love. I am dying without love. I am dying without love. Oh, yes, I'm dying without love. Life here in the studios of K-E-X-P, Joe, Sherlyn, Bill, and Pete. They go by the name, the me-perveyors. Can I do a shout-out? Shout-out. I'd like to do shout-out to my man J. Beeman. He's tuning in, and so hi. Hey, what's up?
What? I just want to say tonight we'll be standing up, which I think we're better at. I'm not used to this sitting down stuff. We'll be playing songs that we know better. We'll be playing songs that we know better. We'll be playing with Danny Barnes. Danny Barnes, one of our heroes. Can't go wrong there. That's at the tractor, by the way. Danny Barnes and the Tennessee Twin. That's two different things, Danny Barnes. Tennessee Twin is the first band. Yeah, and I don't know much about that. Different band Cooper. Okay. You see what what? Hey. That's all starting around 9.30. Any plans for the rest of 2002? Are you just taking it once again? At some point I'm going to have sex. Are there going to be a problem? Okay. Big doing. That might happen this year. It's possible. Yeah. We're doing a real suicidal three nights in a row in New Orleans in September, which to me sounds like sheer folly. And another Midwest tour in November. And New York City weekend October 24th. Excellent. All right. Good luck with all of that. And thank you so much for taking the time today.
Thank you. Thank you, Jack. You bet. We'll go back to the studio here on 90.3, K-E-X-P Seattle. Oh, thanks. Okay. Hi. This is Sheryl under the meat purveyors. Listen to K-E-X-P and Seattle. And we'll come over and rip your mother's head off. Thank you. Hello. Oh, pardon me. This is Bill Anderson for the meat purveyors. And you're perhaps foolishly listening to K-E-X-P Seattle. Hello. This is Bill Anderson from the meat purveyors. And you're perhaps foolishly listening to K-E-X-P Seattle. Hello.
