Description
Episode Description
"In his first in-depth interview for U.S. television, ultra-nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Russia's most powerful opposition figure and widely considered a contender for Kremlin control, talked to Sir David Frost on a broad range of geo-political and biographical topics. The landmark interview colored coverage of the Russian leader in the months that followed. "Sir David's interview with Zhirinovsky, the longest ever conducted with the Russian leader in English made crystal clear the extent and degree of Zhirinovsky's menace to U.S. and Western security interests. Under sustained questioning, Zhirinovsky disclosed, among other points, that: He thought Russia needed a brief dictatorship''perhaps six months''to restore centralized order[;'] The Asian countries rimming Russia to the south should be folded into a greater Russia so that Russian soldiers 'could wash their boots in the Indian Ocean;' and, He saw no reason why Russia should not deploy nuclear weapons because of the precedent established by the U.S. 50 years ago. "Using language that evoked fascist appeals from World War II, Zhirinovsky passionately argued that the Russian people recognize their own suffering in Zhirinovsky's own impoverished childhood."--1994 Peabody Awards entry form.
