Description
Program Description
"'The Grand Tour: A Musical Guide Through The Metropolitan Museum of Art' is a program that combines the riches of two art forms: music and the visual arts. Each month on WQXR we set out on a tour through the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the jewel in the crown of New York's cultural institutions as well as the city's top tourist attraction. We are guided by the Museum's Director, Philippe de Montebello, as we explore both the spectacular special exhibitions as well as the permanent collections. The music is chosen to complement the spirit of these exhibitions, providing a musical counterpart to the visual display. The exhibitions have ranged from the Impressionists to Urban Photography, from the Treasures of Ancient Greece to the gold of a historic African kingdom, from a salute to the legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland[,]to the Golden Age of Danish Painting. 'The Grand Tour' presents a true cross-cultural connection by extending classical music's reach beyond those sitting in a concert hall or opera house into the corridors of a major and popular museum. The program attempts to humanize the vast Metropolitan and its exhibitions for those who are perhaps uninitiated in art. Mr. De Montebello's vivid descriptions -- combined with the musical accompaniment -- make these fascinating exhibitions come to life. 'The Grand Tour' does not seek to preach to the converted -- although we appreciate the positive response from the art community. Rather, we hope that the program encourages someone listening at home or in his or her car to come and visit the museum in person."--1993 Peabody Awards entry form.
