THE CROWDED LIFE is a film about Eric Hoffer, set against the background of San Francisco, the city where he has lived and worked for many years. Hoffer, often called the 'longshoreman-philosopher,' has stirred Americans with his thought-provoking observations on the human condition in his books, articles and controversial interviews with CBS-TV correspondent Eric [Sevareid]. The essential style of this documentary portrait of Eric Hoffer is a montage of various elements that, taken together, convey something of the richness and originality that his life represents. His own thoughts spoken directly to the camera are juxtaposed against scenes of San Francisco over which Richard Basehart reads from Hoffer's popular books, including THE TRUE BELIEVER, THE PASSIONATE STATE OF MIND and ON THE HUMAN CONDITION. The sum total of this interweaving of visual and auditory threads is a unique representation of the vividly felt contradictions that make Eric Hoffer so absorbing."--1978 Peabody Awards entry form.
