Description
Program Description
"Think Twice is a video about the lives of Richard, Amanda, and Travis 'doing their time' inside the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. They tell how their small behavioral problems perpetuated into a life of crime'and punishment. Each teen tells their own story with emotion'and regret. They tell us how it is to go through detention, reception and evaluation, and eventually imprisonment. From cavity checks to maximum security lock-up. They take us through their typical day, beginning at 5:30 in the morning and lights out at 9:00 PM. No shower curtains, no stalls in the restrooms, no talking, no coming out of their rooms without permission, no phone calls, no friends visiting them, no pictures on their walls, none of their own clothes, no personal belongings what-so-ever'no privacy. "Their days are filled with marching, year-round school, cleaning toilets, sinks, and floors, maintaining the grounds of DJJ, keeping their lockers and beds perfectly neat and tidy, walking single file in silence everywhere they go, eating what and when they are told, no seconds, no snacks, no sodas, no contact with the outside world they once knew. Only their memories and their hopes of going home carry them through each monotonous day. "There is much quiet time in DJJ. Richard, Amanda and Travis each have a lot of time to just think. They think about where they are, they think about what they did to get there. They think about what they would do to just be able to sleep in their own beds again. "Three very different young people, from three very different backgrounds, with three things in common: they each thought they would never get caught, they each thought they were too young to get in trouble, and they each wish they had thought twice about the choices they made that changed their lives forever." --1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
