<v Speaker>When you talk about the great blues singers, one man's name is <v Speaker>always at the top of the list. <v Speaker>This is PBS, the Public Broadcasting Service. <v Speaker>Funding for Summerfest 79 is provided by grants from the Corporation <v Speaker>for Public Broadcasting. <v Speaker>This station and other public television stations. <v Speaker>I don't think he's going to enter, so he's already on here, you can introduce him when <v Speaker>we're getting ready to go. I'll give you the go. Stay on the left for me. <v Speaker>OK. Thank you. <v Speaker>We see more jazz blues. <v Speaker>This is an American example. <v Speaker>We remember the days of the big bands and some of the <v Speaker>old standbys, and it's great to see them coming back. <v Speaker>Something we all grew up with and love that's still like the old old <v Speaker>greats like Louis Armstrong. <v Speaker>They picked a small following before jazz has, and it was hidden, <v Speaker>you know, like in the closet. <v Speaker>I hate that this music that they call jazz, our music is the music only <v Speaker>for people that have a sensitiveness to see below the surface of things. <v Speaker>So this is what keeps you going. <v Speaker>Being a broad minded enough to listen to somebody and pick up something, you know, you <v Speaker>live every day, you wake up every day, and you have different perspectives <v Speaker>every day on certain things. The more you live, the more you learn. <v Speaker>And it's very hard for you to stay the same. <v Speaker>You know, music is like ?inaudible? it doesn't change. <v Speaker>It becomes stagnant. To think this is the best year you can hear any place. <v Speaker>But you know, the people out there they gotta be made happy. Cause ?inaudible? washes away ?inaudible? <v Speaker>I find that as an artist, the whole idea is to communicate and then communicating <v Speaker>becomes infectious. In other words, if you're dedicated to what you're doing. <v Speaker>I think the audience is aware of that. <v Speaker>Earlier this year, we lost Charles Mingus. <v Speaker>And this is a reflection of that profoundly <v Speaker>beautiful side of Charles Mingus. <v Speaker>This is his self-portrait in three colors. <v Speaker>[ music]. <v Speaker>Ladies and gentlemen, Newport Saratoga very proud to present the <v Speaker>Benny Carter trio. <v Speaker>Thank you. <v Speaker>[ <v Speaker>song. ] <v Speaker>Couple people here in the last hour or so that I have never heard <v Speaker>before, and I think they're great, great artists. <v Speaker>Like there's old jazz here, Dizzy Gillespie. <v Speaker>I mean, there's just some traditional jazz too. <v Speaker>B.B. King, Johnny Winter and Bonnie Liston's Smith, all of them. <v Speaker>Man Betty Carter. <v Speaker>George Benson is here today. Right. <v Speaker>Jazz crowd is Grover Washington playing today?
<v Speaker>What he wanted to be the top top bill. <v Speaker>I like Johnny Winter myself. Scott, rocked our socks off. <v Speaker>So I figure I'm going to see a lot of different people that I haven't heard of before. <v Speaker>My wife came up to see, David, that, you know, you're bound to find somebody else that <v Speaker>you'll like. That's what I like about these festivals, these people come up to see Linus <v Speaker>Smith and get turned on. <v Speaker>Jessie Gillespie, Joe, I'm going to I expect to buy a few more records <v Speaker>on Monday. I haven't been turned on to yet. <v Speaker>The question, who did you come see today? <v Speaker>George Benson ?inaudible? Planning gathered. <v Speaker>You see, He want to see Ronny loss and hearing lost, but I really want to see him play <v Speaker>together. Mr. Ronnie Laws and pressure. <v Speaker>[music <v Speaker>]. <v Speaker>Thank you, some hard playing from George Benson. <v Speaker>David Harris. Hubrid laws, Jerry Mulligan. <v Speaker>They're all going to be here. <v Speaker>So stick around. We'll be right with you. <v Speaker>Ladies and gentlemen, Newport's Saratoga happy to present Mr. Jimmy Witherspoon. <v Speaker>Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. <v Speaker>Thank you. <v Speaker>Right now, we'd like to do a little tune that we call the bread and butter tune has been <v Speaker>very kind to us through the years, taken from the wonderful work of the late, great <v Speaker>Bessie Smith. Here it is. <v Speaker>[Music. <v Speaker>Gene <v Speaker>Edwards, ladies and gentlemen.
<v Speaker>].
<v Speaker>It's the 1979 edition of the Newport Saratoga Jazz Allstar. <v Speaker>[ <v Speaker>music.
<v Speaker>].
<v Speaker>Everything went. Oh no, but everything is ok now? Yes. <v Speaker>If there ?inaudible?. <v Speaker>Cameras is still out <v Speaker>What you saw come on was emergency and then i have to cook up my auxiliary generator to put on stage power. Cameras wouldve been out though because i dont have enough power to run <v Speaker>cameras. Trucks got auxilary power too. We need that. My heart almost- <v Speaker>That was a close one, huh?
<v Speaker>Quick Power outage. <v Speaker>We don't know, it may be the storm. <v Speaker>[Music <v Speaker>]
