Description
Program Description
"'The Gate of Heaven' is an hour-long documentary that tells the long and storied history of one of America's most beautiful churches, Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York City. Interviews with historians, clergymen, parishioners and architects reveal a compelling story that parallels the early history of the Episcopal Church in New York. Originally incorporated in 1824, Saint Thomas has gone through a number of transformations including two devastating fires and relocation from downtown to midtown. It played an important role in the early history of New York City and was an ongoing testing ground for the century old fight between 'high' and 'low' churchmanship in the Episcopal Church. The fourth church building, completed in 1916, has been called a 'masterpiece' and the 'finest parish church in America. The Saint Thomas Choir School for boys is the only one of its kind in the country and is known the world over for its beautiful Anglican choral music. With its wonderful combination of 'high' church liturgy, powerful Gothic architecture and celestial music, Saint Thomas remains one of the truly unique church experiences in America today. The story of Saint Thomas Church is a look into the very heart of Christian society from early America until today. Because of its location and influence, the church reflected the changing world around it and became a symbol of our constant need for spirituality in good times and bad. The film has been very well received (see responses) and has already garnered several national awards."--1999 Peabody Awards entry form.
