Description
Series Description
"'First Ladies of Radio.' A series of 13 one-hour programs honoring outstanding women pioneer broadcasters in the areas of variety programs, musical programs, dramatic sketches, husband/wife teams, light-opera, children's programs, the big band era. "Each broadcast honors one of the fourteen women named above. Mrs. Phyllis Dumont joined her husband, Lou Dumont, in interviewing Kate Smith at Lake Placid, N.Y.; Carlotta Dale at Cape Cod; Ruth Etting, Ken Murray, Jack Costello by telephone; Ed Herlihy, Vet Boswell, author Ben Gross, author Geogre Eells, Peg Lynch, (creator of radio's Ethel and Albert series); George Torge, Rev. Keane re: Vaughn DeLeath; Atty. Ralph Armstrong re: Julia Sanderson. "Original material from collectors throughout this country, Canada and Australia were used in abundance. Producer traveled 3,000 miles spending 4,000 hours in research, finding original recordings of the 20s and 30s, etc. "These women were such a part of America in the 1930s. Those who worked with them were generous in their time spent with our microphones. These are beautiful stories of a time America will never again see. The producer, Lou Dumont, with a background in radio (from 1943) and journalism (since 1956) combined the ingredients of his talents to produce the series. We have been searching for additional funding to GIVE the series to libraries. Much of my work was done at Broadcast Pioneers Library and at Lincoln Ctr. Lib. Performing Arts."--1979 Peabody Awards entry form.
