Description
Program Description
"'To Dance for Gold' is a two-hour documentary chronicling the events of the 11 International Ballet Competition held in summer, 1982, in Jackson, Mississippi. "Performances by the award-winning dancers and other finalists are interspersed with documentary highlights of the two-week event. Cameras followed the dancers not only onstage but backstage, in the rehearsal halls and during leisure time. "The international village at Millsaps College, where the dancers lived for two weeks, and the international Ballet School at Jackson State University, where members of the IBC jury conducted classes, are also visited. "Featured performers in the program are gold medalists Gina Gail Hyatt from West Germany and Janie Parker from the United States and silver medalists Kathy Thibodeaux, William Pizzuto, Li Cunxin and Katherine Healy, all of the United States, and Alexis Zubiria of Venezuela, Pablo Savoye of France and Pierre Quinn of Canada. "Hosts of the program are Dick Button, Jacques d'Amboise and Marge Champion. "The documentary tells many of the behind-the-scenes-stories of the competition. One chapter related is that of Lin Jianwei from China, who finished performing, walked offstage, out of the Jackson Municipal Auditorium and into a waiting car, which took him to New Orleans, where he requested permission from immigration officials to work in the United States. Meanwhile, his deserted partner, Wang Quifeng, tried to keep a stiff upper lip in front of television cameras. "In addition, the three hosts focus on the city of Jackson, proclaimed by President Reagan as the official home of the competition in America."--1983 Peabody Digest.
