Program Description
"For the second year, KAET-TV joined forces with the Arizona Department of Library, Archives and Public Records for the production of one-minute video book reviews written and presented by 8 to 12 year old kids. The goals of 'Read Earth' were to engage, educate and encourage kids to read --- kids urging other kids to read book on topic such as environmental awareness, endangered species and conservation. Enhancing the project further was an outreach campaign of bookmarks, booklists and posters sent statewide to all public and school libraries. "'Read Earth' was recently offered to other PBS stations for broadcast and to date 65 have requested the series to begin airing on their station in the spring of 1993. To date we can only report anecdotal evidence of this project's success. Surveys will be sent out in February to librarians to evaluate the [series'] success. However, it was the response from the first year of the series that encourage KAET to undertake a second series. Surveys for that effort scored impressive numbers with 96% finding the project of value and an overwhelming 99% requesting that KAET produce 'Read Earth,' the second series."-- 1992 Peabody Awards entry form
