Description
Series Description
"Written and directed by acclaimed sports filmmaker Bud Greenspan, 16 Days of Glory, was distilled from more than a million feet of 35mm film to tell the personal stories of Olympic athletes. The result is a view quite different from commercial network Olympic coverage, and Greenspan readily acknowledges that his crew had a luxury of time not afforded to others covering the event. They spent that time finding and photographing the best moments of a memorable Olympics. 'I'm not interested in statistics. I'm interested in people who happen to excel in their chosen field' Greenspan has said. 'And he or she doesn't necessarily have to be the winner.' "Each episode in the six-part series focuses on a different set of world athletes from the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, interviewing them and following their stories rather than the mechanics of their sports. Profiled are Japan's Yasuhiro Yamashita's courageous performance in the judo competition, despite a painful injury; the imposing swimming accomplishments of West Germany's Michael Gross; the ordeal of Great Britain's Dave Moorcroft as he strives to finish a race he has no chance of winning; and Mary Lou Retton's triumphant victory over Romania's Ecaterina Szabo. "The score for 16 Days of Glory was written by Lee Holdridge and performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with guest soloist Placido Domingo. "'Visually stunning and marvelously scored.'--The Wall street Journal "'A rare insight into the world's greatest athletes.'--United Press International."--1988 Peabody Awards entry form.
