- Description
- Series Description
- "Cinematic Eye is a series of thirteen essays on the art of film, designed to precede the films they analyze. 'Banquets in the Dark' is the last show in the series."Although the series as a whole offers both a history of the European film and an introduction to film technique, each of the shows concentrates on a single film -- in this case, Francois Truffaut's Jules and Jim. The intention is not to give a 'correct' interpretation, but to demonstrate how subtle and complex the movies sometimes are. The series and its accompanying guide are used in college courses around the country, so the series tries to go beyond gossip and nostalgia in its discussions and to relate the films to their historical context and to the other arts. "Truffaut's half-facetious question -- 'Is film more important than life'' -- corresponds to a preoccupation of the series: the relationship of film and reality. Dunlap pursues this theme in his analysis of the film's ideas and technique. There is also an effort to capture something of Truffaut's wistful lyricism in the show."--1978 Peabody Awards entry form.
