Members of the contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago are coming back on stage now here at Mandal hall to tune up for the second half of tonight's concert. On this half we will hear by Handel two sonnets for baritone and three instruments by Milton Babbitt and four songs by Charles Isaacs. By George Frederick Handel. Is one of a large number of Italian chamber can tell it is composed by Handel around 17 0 8 17 0 9 during his long stay in Italy. Our soloist once again will be baritone Charles Van Tassel. Mr Van Tassel will be accompanied by members of the contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago. We asked Mr Van Tassel before this concert why he was performing Brahms
and Handel at a concert of contemporary chamber music and he replied that the contemporary Chamber Players have always been flexible in this respect in allowing their performers to perform various works not necessarily from the contemporary literature and also that these works. You have just heard a performance of. The Chamber Cantata by George Frederick Handel. Has performed by baritone Charles Van Tassel with members of the contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago. The next work on tonight's program is two sonnets for baritone and
three instruments by Milton Babbitt. Here once again are members of the contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago. Milton Babbitt was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania in 1916. He studied at Princeton University where he is currently professor of music and a member of the committee of direction of the Columbia Princeton Electronic Music Center. The two sonnets for baritone and three instruments which we are to hear tonight was completed late in 1955 and first performed in February 1056 at the Juilliard school's festival of American music for which they were commissioned. The metrical organization and rhythmic values and Babbitt setting are determined by the structure of the verse and the text for these works is taken
from poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins. Our soloist once again will be Charles Van Tassel baritone. And rough shape be the music director of the contemporary Chamber Players will conduct this war.
