We have just heard Haydn Sonata Urtext number 19 in light of the printing of the thematic listing and numbering of the Haydn Sonata as in the Urtext EDITION. It is probable that the next Sonata number 20 should have been numbered after the last Sonata as listed in the thematic listing as numbers 21 to 27 and after the reappearance of the number 28 in Autograph fragment. In any case there is a striking similarity to the G minor Sonata number 32. Also a movement Sonata. And it seems there is a possibility the B flat was written in the later 1760s around the same time as a G minor despite its two movements. It is a work of maturity and brings us to the end of the transitional keyboard Sonata as its two movements are titled Allegro modern and moderate at home. The second being an extended minuet with variation and simple development.
That was so not her. Urtext number 20.
With the discovery of one of the last eight Sonata listed in Haydn's holograph catalogue there is hope that perhaps one day we may uncover the other seven which would shed new light on the transitional period of Haydn's development in the keyboards and authors. I shall play for you the autograph fragment of the first movement which contains the opening theme and the recapitulation and the magnificent minuet with trio in D minor. The trio might be called a drama in miniature. However the power and strength of this movement foreshadow the heights of dramatic power that are to come in the C minor Sonata number 33. It is without doubt one of the most outstanding minuet and trio movements in the sonata is I might add that Christa Landon and Karl-Heinz Fussell have attempted a completion of this a lot of that is printed as an appendix to the first volume. So not a number twenty eight in de first movement fragment
second movement minuet and trill. That was the Haydn Sonata or text number twenty eight in
sonata number twenty nine and which was issued with a nod his number 31 and 32 in seventeen eighty eight was discovered to exist an autograph dated seven hundred sixty six. This was dated before the Sonata number 30 dated 1767. And after the pacer chronology had been established. It has been the most important clue to the dating of Haydn's earliest mature works. It is a fully developed three movement Sonata expressing a wealth of musical ideas in lyrical style and ending with a brilliant finale. This last movement has one of the two examples of original Heine fingering that has come down to us. His recommendation for changing fingers on repeated notes. Because of the distinct individual style of this sonata and because of the autograph date of 766 we have the first real possibility for
stylistic comparison of the Haydn Sonata us. The three movements are modern Ratto and Dante and Allegro de Montebello. That was so not her number 29 and flat on this third
program in the series the piano sonata supplied and we have heard Sonata has 17 through 20 28 and 29 performed discussed by Raymond Dudley.
