Music in the making. Produced by Millikan university under a grant from the Educational Television and Radio Center in cooperation with the National Association of educational broadcasters. The Milliken School of Music presents concert pianist Elizabeth Travis chairman of the piano department in a recorded consideration of contrapuntal playing Louise crimps who was assisting Professor Travis by playing the musical illustrations will open the program with a few majors from Bach's took Otto in D major. Coming under Music is in many respects woven in a way which has many points of
similarity with other fabrics. It is diverse texture and various ways of exposing it. But we now turn our attention. We might speak of a piece of music being written few much the same way as we speak of a poem being written exam after every composition written in few is not necessarily a proper fugue. A composer may break into few at any time in the same way an author may middle of a piece of prose break into verse. Our musical examples for this programme on contrapuntal playing are to be taken from Bach's the Major to Kata. The double forgotten movement which you will hear first is built on these two motives. Now let's listen for a moment to a bit of contrapuntal conversation. We
have first an extract minor the announcement of the two halves. Now in the middle voice we have the answer to this announcement in the key of C Sharp major which is the dominant listen for the answer. The first move in the middle voice the second appearing this time in the bass. In listening to our opening bit of the Takata you may have detected a measure and a half which did not sound at all like part of the few pattern short soft interlude like this one are characteristic of form and the called episode. Their function is to effect a modulation or some related key in which again the voices or some of them with the subject. Let's listen to the way our short episode
functions. First the two entrances of our subject. Now. And now the episode linking up the entrance of the subject in the new key. Is that the same as the organist weaves the different registers on his
collar. Now we turn to the few Takata again. On these two boxes written a few rich contrapuntal humor and seriousness has been its interesting mix intensify the sense of structure in this essentially humorous movement box works. There is little merging of piano to 40 and vice a versa. A certain strength of the whole period and is followed by another period of contrast and intensity of tone at the beginning of measure 38 40. Then suddenly for piano and still another
entrance back to forty first of all played with mics. And with the so-called terrorist dynamics which expose clearly on what simple lines ma conceived of work. Contrapuntal works are intricate edifices the 19th century frame of mind and expect to be satisfied with the
sheer pleasure of learning to understand the architecture cannot be equalled and performance. The points we've been discussing as she closes the program with a few from box to part. Why.
