Greetings I'm Christie the wordsmith. Every dictionary and literary source explains the role of a proverb in its own way. I appreciate the observation of Robert south a 17th century English scholar and cleric who said what is a proverb. But the experience and observation of several ages gathered and summed up into one expression proverbs are concise and familiar statements that reflect a culture's accumulated wisdom. A Proverbs job is to teach without preaching. Its aim to instruct while charming US with its wit and brevity and sometimes with its rhyme Take for example the expression an apple a day keeps the doctor away. This rhyming proverb reminds us that Apples provide beneficial nutrients and claims that eating one a day will preserve one's health. An apple a day keeps the doctor away is memorable through its brevity and its rhyme. Another expression from this roster is April showers bring May flowers a rhyming reminder that some unpleasant
events eventually lead to better things. The proverb birds of a feather flock together tells us in a brief rhyme that people are attracted to those who are like themselves. Every language has its own proverbs and as in English some of them rhyme. The German proverb Vila Hendo Brink's gleich SU ENDA translates many hands bring things quickly to a conclusion. Next time on Christie the wordsmith more rhyming proverbs. CHRISTIE The wordsmith is sponsored by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Zoot enterprises.
