Greetings This is Christy Smith Christie the wordsmith less time on this series we parsed the term snowmageddon a word used to describe the colossal blizzard that battered the mid-Atlantic states on February 5th and 6th of 2010 the mageddon of Snowmageddon is an allusion to Armageddon the sight of a climactic battle between the forces of good and evil as described in the New Testament book of Revelation in current usage. Armageddon refers to any modern cataclysmic event from nuclear war to a natural occurrence such as a destructive winter storm. Another playful moniker describing the mid-Atlantic blizzard of 2010 is snow pocalypse linguists would call this a bland word or a fusion of snow and Apocalypse apocalypse is also taken from Revelation. The last and most prophetic book of the Bible the verses in Revelation predict the events leading up to the end of time. And it features the infamous four horsemen of the apocalypse personifications of war famine pestilence and death. The word apocalypse comes from the Greek
verb apocalyptic meaning to disclose. And what is disclosed in this book is a picture of the world's demise and its eventual renewal in modern usage. Apocalypse refers to a catastrophic event involving total destruction. The snow pocalypse of 2010 with its record breaking precipitation probably convinced many mid-Atlantic denizens that their world might indeed end by snow. I'm Christie the wordsmith.
