New Jersey Nightly News. With Rebecca Sobel in Trenton and Clayton Vaughn in Newark. Good evening. Clayton Vaughn is on vacation in the news tonight most New Jersey government leaders are impressed with President Carter's tough energy stand. But some oil companies are skeptical. And the state assembly quickly tries to act on a number of important bills to end the session we'll have a live report. In sports Bill Perry reports on a rough night for the cosmos and looks at the Englishtown drag racing championships. And we'll take a closer look at problems in the state's largest municipal hospital. The Jersey City Medical Center. President Carter took one of the toughest stands of his presidency last night and his speech on energy during that speech the president announced a plan to cut oil imports by 50 percent over the next 10 years. Reaction to the speech is of course mixed. Governor Byrne gave them high marks. Oil industry officials were not enthusiastic. Reggie Wells reports you will be the
immediate test of our ability to unite this nation. And it can also be the standard around which we rally. President Carter had delayed his energy speech for 10 days but after it was delivered last night. Reaction was swift. This morning Governor Byrne praised the president for what he called bold action. The governor admits however that there could be serious shortages of gas and heating oil in New Jersey in the next five years while the country is developing alternate energy sources. But he says he agrees with the president that action must be taken now and the approach is taken which is the source of energy. And we recognize what natural resource they says to go with those energy sources is a good approach. The New Jersey Petroleum Council a lobbying group for petroleum suppliers in the state says last night's speech was vague and the executive director of the group says President Carter has not been very
successful in getting any kind of energy bill through Congress. The president proposes I guess the saying goes in the Congress disposes. It might be a long way between his aims and actually being put into effect by the Congress. As far as saving energy some utility companies say they could switch to coal now if they could get the environmental protection departments of the state and federal government to allow them to exceed minimum pollution standards. In Trenton I'm Ridgewell governor from New Jersey New York and Pennsylvania are urging Congress to finance alternative energy projects. Governors Kerry and Thornburg and a spokesman for Governor Byrne told a Senate Energy Committee today a federal state corporation should be set up to raise money for the production of water power synthetic fuels and other alternatives. In his statement Burns said the discovery of such alternatives could save the north east a million barrels of oil a day or a quarter of the oil used in this area. All three governors told Congress it was move
immediately to make the money available. Governor Byrne has proposed new legislation to help the elderly and handicapped pay their utility bills this winter. As the governor explained the emergency lifeline credit program involves a credit payment on gas and electricity bills. The program will provide all those households by October of this year with a $100 credit which would be applied to electric and natural gas utility bills. There is a catch to the plan. The money would come from the extra casino taxes the governor hopes to collect but so far the assembly hasn't passed the excess casino tax bill. That casino tax bill is not the only measure waiting for action. The assembly may be in for a long session tonight as lawmakers try to finish things up so they can break for the summer. Mary Amoroso reports from the assembly chamber generated more than bill providing
financing for gubernatorial primary campaigns but the bill sponsor says he's going to bring up the financing measure later tonight. And earlier this family also shelved a bill that would have allowed physicians assistance to this in New Jersey a lot of houses still have a long list of measures to get through tonight. They take over of private buses and a competing bill of cash incentives for private classes and increasing the state taxes. And of raising the drinking age. The assembly did pass a bill this morning that would establish statewide high school graduation requirements and they have been promising that this would be the last session before summer recess. It's going to be true to its promise. The Senate is going to have to say awfully late tonight at the State House. I'm very impressed. A state study estimated earlier this year that 36000 teenagers in New Jersey are alcoholics. Officials hope that raising the legal drinking age as the legislature might do tonight will reduce that number.
But as my power reports few people expect miracles no one says that raising the drinking age to 19 will solve all the problems of teen age alcohol abuse. Some groups say it won't solve any problems. That New Jersey alcoholism Association believes the higher legal age will only discourage teenagers who already know how to handle their liquor but won't make any difference to youngsters who have been abusing alcohol all along. More important than raising the legal age. The association says he's raising the quality of public school education about drinking. The state doesn't have a program to teach high school pupils about alcohol. The new law orders educators to come up with one. Some state legislators claim that raising the drinking age to 19 will take liquor out of the hands of high school kids. Critics argue that high school kids have always been able to get liquor even when the legal age was 21. And that the new law isn't going to stop them. For at least 10 years. The school teachers and politicians have been telling us that the number one problem among teenagers is drug abuse. Some people forgot that all
along teenagers were experimenting with a much older drug alcohol. Some people say that raising the legal drinking age to 19 won't solve everything but it's good because at least it recognizes that alcohol abuse may have been forgotten but it's not gone dawn. In Trenton. New Jersey's mass transit systems got a shot in the arm from Washington today. Transportation Secretary Brock Adams announced the state will get 100 million extra dollars during the next two years to improve commuter rail and bus lines. The money will be used on long range projects such as improvements on the New Jersey coast rail line the Morristown rail line the Newark subway system and the buying of new buses. White collar state employees were back on the job today. Their four day strike apparently over union leaders say contract talks will resume soon. But the state says it has no more money to offer. Steve Taylor reports.
When state office workers walked off the job last week it wasn't because the unions told them to. The unions had worked out a new contract with a five point five percent raise the first year. But the striker said It wasn't enough. However when those same workers went back to their jobs today it was because the unions told them to. And because the unions faced bankruptcy from a twenty five thousand dollars a day fine for everyday the walkout continued and because the state agreed to reopen contract negotiations today union leaders said they thought their members would not start any more wildcat walkouts while those talks were going on. We go back to the table when we come up with a contract where everybody's happy I don't hear any more Barbara. How long can you remember his work without a contract. I think our members are willing to hold for as long as it takes to come out with a decent contract. Salmon and Murphy came to Mercer County courthouse to see about that $25000 a day. And since the walkout was over Judge Morton Greenberg canceled the fine when union officials came out. The stage chief negotiator Frank mation was walking by. He offered
congratulations about the cancelled fine but little hope about the negotiations which will start later this week. Is it still the state's position that there's no new money to offer these unions. I don't see any money to be put on the table. Mason added that he would be willing to talk about other ways of spreading the same amount of money among the office workers. If union leaders think they can sell that idea to their members despite the optimism of union leaders there's real dissension among the rank and file. Their dislike for the five point five percent contract settlement which drove them to the streets has not diminished. And if the new negotiations produce only a redistribution of that five point five percent with no new money some of those state employees may be back on strike soon. The Mercer County Courthouse in Trenton I'm Steve Taylor. A psyche Scott psychiatric outpatient was charged today with killing his cousin and seriously wounding his mother with an axe. According to police George Harper thought his cousin and mother was stealing his Social Security checks and his money. So Saturday night he allegedly used an ax to kill his cousin and he slashed his
mother in the Westwood apartment they shared. Police say Harker's mother ran through the apartment screaming for help. Only to have neighbors shut their doors. The police found Harper's mother unconscious in a driveway. Harper was arraigned today in Bergen County superior court. Prosecutors are calling it the largest gambling bust in North Jersey in 10 years with 25 people arrested in Essex Hudson and union counties and across the Hudson in Manhattan. At a press conference today at the Essex County Prosecutor's Office law enforcement officials displayed confiscated money weapons betting slips and book charts and said Much of the activity centered on baseball and horse race betting as well as an illegal lottery. In all officials say it covered more than two hundred and seventy five million dollars a year in illegal bets. And the money was oiling the machinery of organized crime. I'm a very firm believer in holding down governmental corruption by keeping pressure on organized crime and lottery and bookmaking. Are the two
major sources of income for those organizations based upon your past experience and realistically speaking. How long would it take them to get this kind of operation underway again. I would think if they were intent upon doing it they could do it within days. All 25 suspects have posted bail they're now out of jail waiting for trial. As expected the conspiracy trial of reputed mobster Ruggeri old boy Ardo has been postponed indefinitely. The 88 year old boy art known as Richi the boot was arrested last May along with seven others on charges of conspiring to murder extort funds and run loan sharking operation. The state claims the eight suspects were part of a national organized crime ring. The Monmouth County trial was postponed today to give attorneys more time to prepare their cases. Speculation continues that reputed mob chieftain car Glen Pei may have been ready to take a step into Atlantic City in a step on the toes of another prominent underworld family.
It was that reported aggressiveness that may have led to GALANTES execution type slaying in Brooklyn last week Jack comedy has more. To come on Galanti. Oh Atlantic City state law enforcement officials say they're not sure but they're ready to consider the possibility that Galanti was murdered for being too aggressive for wanting a piece of the prostitution action in Atlantic City. Action control by the Angelo Bruno crime family in Philadelphia promise Detective Thomas Delaney who spent a year undercover investigating the mob believes that he says intelligence reports indicate that galumphing and Bruno had been meeting to discuss Atlantic City before GALANTES death based on intelligence reports that Mr Galanti was in Atlantic City looking to take a percentage. And in my estimation a very big percentage at this point in time I think that there's so many pieces of pie and big Galanti over eight and a cut out his appetite the way he says GALANTES killing would have to have been approved by a number of mafia family
bosses. I think if you look at organized crime again relating it to a business that this was the head of one of the largest companies so that they're going to get the message loud and clear I don't think you to find a gang war you can find bodies all over the place. This was one level where a guy really overstepped his bounds and they stopped him. But it's not likely to stop the growth of prostitution in Atlantic City officials admit it's a problem. This videotape taken last year shows streetwalkers on the eve of the casino opening but was mostly freelance. Then he's getting bigger more organized and moving indoors. New Jersey law enforcement officials can't confirm Delaneys theories but they admit that he's knowledgeable and the facts he's given hold up one highly placed state police investigator who says he's intrigued by Delaneys details of the Atlantic City Galante connection said in his own words it sure sounds like he knows what he's talking about in Newark. I'm Jack Cafferty.
Well it was a weekend of the three H's hot hazy humid and it carried over into today. Tonight cloudy good chance of showers. In fact we're having a thunder shower in the Trenton area. Now low temperatures will be in the low 70s tomorrow partly sunny and less humid. That's going to be a really hot should be in the mid 80s and for Wednesday. Sunny and pleasant. They. May. Do.
You know you didn't watch the seventh seal on Wednesday in. The Cosmos fighting and losing soccer games. Here's Bill Perry. Thank you Rebecca. It just wasn't the Cosmo's night last night at Giants Stadium. Vancouver beat the cosmos 42 the cosmos have now lost two in a row for the first time since the 1977 season at home. Franz Beckenbauer returned. Coming off a knee injury but early on you knew it was going to be a strange night. Vancouver took a one to nothing wait on a strange goal. Carlos Alberto collided with his own goal we all Yassine and the white caps had that strange goal that happened and did one to nothing. Vancouver made it two to nothing and then the cosmos got on the board. Johan newschool is the goal getter but the backbreaker came on this play. Ray Willington shot it in Yassine was fooled watch on the replay. The ball gets the net over Yaseen shoulder. Georgio OK now you've got to go. But Vancouver added another for the fourth to final. Oh yes the fight after a collision between Vancouver's Willie Johnston and the cosmos and tyrannic a secondary in the two
exchanged punches. Both benches cleared even some fans came onto the field. Madness Iskandariyah and Johnston were ejected as working out ya and John Craven of the white caps Cosmo's technical director who we Almazan is upset and says the cosmos will protest the game. We protest again tonight because I believe that the way that the official visé the game against the night in question was was disgraceful. I'm sick and tired of the do we to be here. We. Are afraid to care. For. Crozier's. Because they believe that the a full cause was a legitimate one. The people going to say that we are protecting cause wars and I believe. I never say nothing in my Vicary about the referee but I'm sick and tired of these in America now. The National Hot Rod Association is 10 Faneuil Summer Nationals wrapped up early last evening at Raceway Park in Englishtown and the Top Fuel category Jebb Allen repeated as the summer
national champion. When you're at the line ready to go years do it. Why take a different approach I think than all the other drivers do. I feel that drag racing is a sport and we have to get psyched up. We've got to get going so I sit in my car go myself go go go go just like the football players for they go out on the football field. You know I have to be. That way. I get everything out of my mind and all I think about is the driver. You
know I'm the driver I got to leave I got to do this. There was a major upset in Pro Stock where toto what New Jersey's Frank Canio beat top qualifier Bob Glidden. I thought he would do pretty well because we've been doing well lately. You know what the other races and we more or less had our act together you know qualified number two which is a good position. You know we were able to stay away from going to the final in Funny Car Raymond Beedle wanted all the races are over the one quarter mile dragstrip and I wondered what makes one strip better than others. Will is just the preparation like cleaning the track and they keep it up and this track has remained in the track the sea level. So there's nothing really wrong with BTs BTS elapsed time in the streaker division there was an easy winner. There'll be no one entered. So this guy wanted pants down. I mean hands down one of New Jersey's top summer events is set for Wednesday of this week. The bounty hunter Grand Prix the biggest offshore
powerboat race in the world. It starts off now off Point Pleasant Beach 10 a.m. Wednesday and the NBA's Houston Rockets have signed Moses Malone to a three year contract. Malone last season's MVP in the NBA becomes the world's highest paid athlete team athlete earning more than 800 thousand dollars a year. I'd like just a little bit of that. That's sports Rebecca. Thanks Bill. Gerry Ferraro and his New Jersey gasoline retailers association have gone to court trying to lift a judge's ban on gas station shutdowns. The Association last week ordered its members to close up shop in protest over federal allocation guidelines. But the state stopped it by getting a temporary restraining order. Ferrara filed papers today to have that order lifted. A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday. Over three thousand six hundred union represented electrical workers went on strike today at five Westinghouse plants in New Jersey. Non-union workers also joined picket lines idling plants and Newark health side. Trenton New Jersey city in Bloomfield the strike
