- Description
- Program Description
- "Scarves of Many Colors: Muslim Women and the Veil is a 25-minute radio documentary coproduced by Joan Bohorfoush and Diana Dickerson. The program features the voices of both covered and non-covered Muslim women with diverse points of view on the practice of veiling. They are scholars, activists, students and educators. The women describe the different meanings of the veil in different countries. They also tell of discrimination toward women who choose to veil in this country. Through their stories, the program explores the stereotypes based on misunderstanding of Islam and Muslim culture. "Up to now, Hollywood and mainstream media have made little attempt to produce programs which promote understanding of Islam, Muslim women or the veil. Our purpose in producing this radio documentary was to fill this void in broadcast journalism. Scarves of Many Colors has the potential to reach a broad audience and educate the public about Muslim women and Islamic practices. Geared toward a popular audience, the program is fast-paced and features world music. Noted speakers include Hanan Ashrawi, Palestinian leader in the Arab-Israeli Peace Process; Naomi Shihab Nye, Arab-American poet; and Fatima Mernissi, Moroccan sociologist and author of 'Beyond the Veil.' "'Scarves of Many Colors' merits consideration for the 1996 George Foster Peabody Awards because it is a balanced and in-depth look at an issue that has been largely ignored by the media, and misunderstood by the American public. We believe the program will contribute toward a deeper understanding and greater dialogue between Muslim and non-Muslim communities. We are proud to submit this documentary radio program for recognition of excellence in the field of broadcast journalism."--1996 Peabody Awards entry form. Other speakers include Anita Weiss, a professor in the International Studies department at University of Oregon; Iraqi American scholar 'Aseel Nassar Dick'; 'Faryal Ghuneim'; 'Ellika Perus'; 'Abeer Sher'; Sharifa Alkhateeb, founder of the North American Council for Muslim Women (NACMW); Professor Kathleen Moore; Maria al-Haddad; Amy Bruner; 'Janey Nichols'; 'Marian Duwan'; 'Bahar Jabari'; 'Mariam Bharadar'; and scholar Nimat Hafez Barazangi.
