- Description
- Episode Description
- "The play is set in medieval [England] during a time of great upheaval. A monk, John Ferly, has wandered from his monastery. He has been taking part in a ritual temptation in which the monks reenact the temptation of Christ by spending forty days and nights in the wilderness. Exhausted, Ferly is taken to an inn where he meets three old friends from his childhood. The friends coax Ferly to tell them about his life. It soon becomes apparent that Ferly may be dreaming all that has taken place and these old friends are in fact devils sent to tempt him. In the end, Ferly renounces the monastery and still uncertain about his temptation, chooses to remain in this world."--1977 Peabody Awards entry form.
