Series Description
POET'S VOICE "The Poet's Voice was a series of 13 highly produced, informative performance/documentaries, each focusing on the life and work of one of the 20th century's greatest poets. The series was hosted by actress Blair Brown and distributed nationally by National Public Radio. "One of the goals of the project was to open up to a large audience the priceless archives of the 92nd Street Y's Unterberg Poetry Center. The successful collaboration between the 92nd St. Y and WNYC brought the cultural richness of New York to the nation. "Radio and poetry both require listening and imagination and are, therefore, well-suited to each other. Each half-hour program was a tapestry that interwove archival readings by the poet with music, biographical information, and commentary from such prestigious poets and literary figures as Joseph Brodsky, Derek Walcott, Rita Dove, Lucille Clifton, Linda Gray Sexton, Richard Wilbur, and Robert Creeley. By hearing the rhythm, tone, and character in each poet's readings and by providing a historical and human context for the poetry, The Poet's Voice made the works of these influential poets engaging, entertaining, and inspiring to a general listening audience. "Continuing WNYC's mission of creating thoughtful cultural programming, The Poet's Voice featured poets from diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences, from Robert Frost and Dylan Thomas to Czeslaw Milosz and Gwendolyn Brooks. Included in the series were two Spanish-speaking poets, Pablo Neruda and Octavio Paz, whose work was presented in both original and translated form using creative production techniques. Also included is earlier pilot with Linda Hunt as host. 5242 2111 4634 Blair Brown is the host of the regular series. W.H. Auden: World-famous by the age of 23, Wystan Hugh Auden was a seminal poet in contemporary literature. Urbane and witty, he was a master of form and the towering poetic figure for a generation.
