INTRO I'll electronics is Rod Mankind, the wonderful way of instant communications. It brings a world into our living rooms and people, places and events are seen on our television screens and radios. Our knowledge and
experience is broadened at the turn of a dial. Unfortunately we don't all have an opportunity to determine what's to be seen on the screen. Latinos in particular have had very little to say with what is to be seen and heard in broadcasting. In an effort to change that the National Latino Media Coalition has been organized. They met in San Antonio Tejas. We were invited. The setting is San Antonio, an appropriate place. It is less than two hours from the Mexican border. The closest Latino neighbor of the United States, Texas, the sprawling symbol of bigness, growth and wealth in this country. Latinos from across the nation have come in here to share concerns over another of these countries sprawling giants, the communications industry. The industry that collects interpret center's means news media and information and entertainment and which to a large degree shapes public opinion. One of the greatest needs of we as a Spanish speaking speaking people have in this country is to develop a
greater awareness on the part of the American public of the problems that your people face in every literally every state of the Union not only in the Southwest and in New York and in Chicago and the big metropolitan areas but in virtually every state of the Union. We're going to have to work in a concerted fashion to call to the attention of the American public what our concerns are, what our particular unique problems are, our language problem and yet one of our greatest assets with 250 million people who speak Spanish just to the south of us. It's important that we develop our assets and that we call attention to the positive contributions we've made to this country. If you do put through a recommendation and as an observer I'd like to recommend that Latino media coalition push the FCC to hurry up with this. Another government official who has made great progress in the short time in office is Commissioner Benjamin Hoax. The first minority member of the Federal Communications Commission to sit on the seven-member board. It is my contention and belief that this country can never be whole, can never achieve its promise of greatness until all of the
various minority groups that make up his population receive adequate treatment on the media and it is a fact to say that they have not received it up to this point. The National Latino Media Coalition was just to express his discontent with the national networks for failing to send spokesmen's and representatives to participate in the third annual conference. The National Latino Media Coalition established a National Latino Advisory Committee to work with NBC, ABC, CBS, CPB to meet with network and management and advise, recommend, monitor, network programming and policies. The Latinos convening here are acutely aware of the 16 million U.S. citizens that they are representing. Latinos know the potential impact if they can ever gain adequate access to the means of communications which have virtually silenced Latinos in the U.S. We're now talking to Genio again who is with Channel 9. Genie, what exactly is your position with Channel 9? I'm the Director of Minority Affairs
for the entire station. How did you get your position there, Genie? Through Advocates, through I local group, the Colorado Committee on Mass Media for this manager named Negotiated for a created manager's position in order to service the needs of the minority population. Hi, I'm a student, I'm still a student. I've been working with television for the past two years. This past year is a full-time person in WNAC Boston, producing an anchoring and new segment in La Caravana, Spain. I'm a daily regular full-time reporter that's on the street reporter and I have five shows. And how do you feel about the media responding to Latino communities at two slow? Of course it's I can always say that there's not enough response and it's always too slow. Let's say this is the bilingual bicultural coalition on mass media. So-and-so is having a press conference at 10 o'clock on Tuesday morning. That's 10 days from now. You'll receive something in writing and will you cover it? What is your name? Regional
delegations have been elected in six regions from the Pacific shores of San Diego to the New England states and from the Great Lakes to the Texas Panhandle. Chicanas and Puerto Ricans bring the greatest members but the delegations include Latinos whose cultural roots extend to Venezuela, Cuba, Dominic and Republic and the gamut of Latino nations of South America and the Caribbean. About the controversy that has developed here at this conference. I'm saying it's not a controversy. It's a matter of semantic. It's a matter of concepts that I think advocates those who are taking on the stations are very suspicious of professionals. But we also have professionals that have our fully employed today by the media industry and those professionals for us are advocates. So we've resolved our problems this morning. We now are at the conclusion whereby we are accepting citizens advocates and professional advocates. These advocates will continue to pursue the improvement of the image of the Latino on television. I think the American Mirror of Television fails to reflect our language and our culture as individuals. In our area in
San Antonio we've got a lot of people on the air but we need more people in management and management is saying we don't have qualified Mexican Americans anywhere that we can locate to take management positions but they were saying the same thing about air people and we have now qualified Mexican Americans that are on the air and there are Mexican Americans that are qualified to be in management if only given the opportunity to prove themselves. It's not all work though. In San Antonio the music of Latino rhythms pulses as the dancers match the psychological exhaustion of the conference with the physical exhaustion of salsa and corrida. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Miguel. La bros. Olca. Manuel.
Olga murió odiando a Manuel
Amor. Amor. Amor. Amor. Amor. Amor.
