- There are billions of people across the world who are living in poverty and 800 million people who are illiterate--two-thirds of them women and girls. While it's not uncommon for girls for in developing countries to be married off or working by the time they reach the 5th grade, if a girl goes to school, her income opportunities grow by 15% every single year she stays in school. Whether it's teaching children to read, helping them acquire life skills, or finding meaningful work for women and youth in developing countries, Leila Janah of SamaGroup and Erin Ganju of Room to Read are social entrepreneurs breaking the cycle of poverty for millions.
