Description
Program Description
"Beryl Markham described her African home as a 'world with out walls,' and she lived an adventurous life which recognized no boundaries. She hunted barefoot with African friends while growing up in Kenya, she made the first west-bound solo flight across the Atlantic, married 3 times and had a fling with royalty, became a great horse trainer and wrote a critically praised memoir. "She died on August 4 in Nairobi, at the age of 83, after enjoying a last burst of fame following the republication of her book, 'West with the Night.' Ernest Hemingway, who had met Markham in Kenya, said her book made him 'ashamed of myself as a writer. I felt that I was simply a carpenter with words,' he said, 'but this girl can write rings around us who consider ourselves as writers.' "Markham made her Atlantic crossing in September, 1936 with just enough fuel to buck strong headwinds and make a crash landing in Nova Scotia. "The documentary reconstructs Markham's life from archival film and stills, location footage and interviews with her contemporaries in Kenya. As a direct result of our documentary airing on public television, first locally in January, 1986 and then nationally on PBS in October, 1986, Markham's book 'West with the Night,' has been number one on the Bay Area's Best Seller List for 51 weeks, and number one on the New York Times Best Seller List for the last 4 weeks. (1/7/87) "Markham the extraordinary woman, and 'West with the Night,' her extraordinary book were lost to history. We feel that our documentary 'World Without Walls' merits consideration by the panel because the documentary was instrumental in the national rediscovery of a truly inspirational woman, and a wonderful literary work."--1986 Peabody Awards entry form.
