going to concentrate on for the most part. He came in New York City and the mid-20s with Cecil Scott, saxophonist, later worked with Charlie Johnson's band and had some fine men and a lucky milleter likewise. That was in the early 30s toward 33. It's with Benny Carter more than once and with him it is mid-30s band and again around 1939 or so. Teddy Hill briefly in 1935-36 and went France in 1935 and worked with the Billy Lewis band over there and recorded with him too. Another expatriate, quite a number then, surprisingly you don't realize how many did go with it. Nothing like now as opposed but they were quite a few American jazzmen there at various times in the 30s. He even so turned off to India with a Leon Abbey group in 1936 and stayed there for about a year. He had a co-op group for a time and they
worked in Alexandria, Egypt, mind you, 1939 and he had the distinction of playing for the wedding reception of the Shah of Iran that year. Back to the U.S. with the war clouds gathering and already started in fact in early 1940. He was very busy the first half of the 40s here. Benny Carter again as I mentioned. Benny's early 40s band, he worked at the famous store in 1941 with small groups. He joined Noble Sistals band for a time and toured 1942 and he had a small group of his own also in 1943 and 1944. We're not to California for a time with the late John Kirby in 1945 I think just after the war and from California he went off he's really a world traveler. We're not to in the other direction to the Philippines with the Pacific. On a U.S.O show in late 1945 stayed over and worked for a
while, a short while in Japan in 1946. Then back to New York again worked with Cywalters for, no not Cywalters, a pianist, Cy Oliver that is in 1946 and 2007 and finally back to France again to stay except for a couple of visits in the 50s based in Paris mostly but he tours also in Germany and elsewhere in France, Riviera, Spots and so on. He's appeared in a couple of French films and done a good deal of TV and radio. He made a great many records in the 50s particularly on French labels all of which are unavailable now mostly 10 inch LPs they were for HMV in Pate and French Columbia and far more recently he toured first time in this situation. He toured as a soloist with local rhythm sections in Great Britain in 1967 and reminded English jazz fans what a
beautiful horn. Bill Coleman does play. Let's open as our world traveler, our jazz expatriate, trips his way down to the crescent city. Yeah, we're down the other new Orleans. Turn a latin on Henry Cremer.
It was a nice lyrics sound but very hot. This was 1938 date without Piano. Bill Coleman's trip at Edgar Courant's there on tenor saxophone. Son of two, of course John Mitchell's guitar, Wilson Myers on bass and Tommy Benford on drums. Bill's date too. Way down Yonda, New Orleans 1938. Good horn. Lodge band. Is this the other small unit? A day.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. ąсintia
toosintia bola yada raghi comtan the you did I double dare you to sit over here, Terry Shand and Jimmy Eaton. Yeah, we've put a good big band side. No, it sounded like a big band, it was an octet, got a big sound out of it. From 1938, yeah. The Sabers are open up way down Yonder and New Orleans. Is Eddie Brunner on tenor? It is saxophone, section, Alex Combell, Brunner's date. Noel Shibost on tenors. And another of our expatriates who was all over the place too,
including India, like Bill Coleman, but he returned also in the 40s. Herman Chittison on piano, the later Herman Chittison. Oscar Alamand and guitar, and Grazie on bass, and Tommy Benderford on drums. Bill's fine trumpet. And a good fiery hot song of that too. All improvised notice in that opening chorus, rather than playing the lead over the saxophone. One for Earl. And Simon Bond on the top! nd
