Just Jazz; Pianist-Composer Herbie Hancock: 1960s, Pt. 1

You ZB tier for the first of two sessions on the pianist composer Herbie Hancock in his recordings of the 1960s. This first date is a leader in 1962 and we've been hearing things from a non-net date he did in 1959.

Mostly from Herbie's own dates and a few things with others of course Miles Davis with which Quintetti worked for about five years. Couple of things with Donald Bird with whom we worked in the early 60s and all Hancock originals. He's from Chicago born in 1940. He started studying music at seven and was something of a prodigy. We studied at Hyde Park High School at his own jazz band which worked around town and then he matriculated at Grinnell College. He majored in engineering for a couple of years and then changed the music all out for music. Graduated in 1960 and became a professional. Already was a professional in a sense but a full-time professional right away working around Chicago.

He also took some additional music courses at Roosevelt University in Chicago and studied with Nitorio Gianini, the composer. That was later in Manhattan by the way. He worked in Chicago with a couple of visiting groups including the rate of Coleman Hawkins. And later that year Donald Bird used him in Chicago as a substitute and encouraged him to come to New York. And so he made the big trip to the apple and settled in. Freelance, Tier with Oliver Nelson and others with Bird II of course and recorded with Donald Bird with whom we'll hear him as I mentioned. He became pretty well known around town as one of the best young modern jazz pianists. And finally joined Miles Davis in 1963 with Miles for about five years or so. During that time I established himself as not only a busy freelancer during periods of inactivity with Davis.

But as one of the most gifted of the younger pianists certainly. He's done some writing for TV, even commercials. And he wrote the score for the Michelangelo and Tony only film Blow Up as you probably know. And in the late 60s began working with his own sex stat occasionally. He just worked the modern rage as festival and has recorded two. And as I said, all originals by Herbie on these two shows and what better to open with than a blues. One other. One.
