. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . We're coming out of our first multi-song set here just moments into tonight's edition of Friday Night Jazz on Vermont Public Radio. I'm your host Rubin Jackson. Welcome. Happy Friday.
So what do we listen to? We concluded with the hardest working man in show business, Mr. James Brown from the 50th anniversary collection and body heat part one and we started with a collection released in 2013 by Alta Saxophoneist Rudras Mahan Thapa. It's called Gamak and we heard waiting is forbidden. You see the musical relationships there? What did Joe Strummer from the Clash called one of his latter recordings, Global Agogo. I think that's a great example of same. Next, one of my favorite releases from 2014. The trio known as the Bad Plus and we're going to listen to their rendition of Igor Stravinsky's part of it. Anyway, Igor Stravinsky's groundbreaking very controversial rite of spring and we'll hear the augurs of spring. We just concluded the second two songs set here just moments into our one of Friday Night Jazz
on VPR. Mr. Orinette Coleman from of Human Feelings and we listened to the composition Times Square. Before that, the trio known as the Bad Plus, their personal, very personal reading of Igor Stravinsky's The Right of Spring and we heard the movement or the section of the piece entitled The Augurs of Spring. We're going to change it up just a little bit here in our one of tonight's show. This another much loved collection released back in 2014. We've played it quite often and I really appreciate the feedback you sent concerning it. Pianist Billy Childs and his loving, very, very wonderful Up for Grammy Award, as a matter of fact, a collection. It's a tribute to Laura Nero. It's entitled Billy Childs, a map to the treasure, reimagining Laura Nero. We'll hear lettucey and her reading of a piece, of course written by Laura Nero, big hit for the group
The Fifth Dimension, Stone Soul Pignic. Pignic Picnic Come on, come on, let's hurry down to a stone. So picnic, Surry down to a stone. So picnic, there'll be lots of time in one eye. Red girl of honey, size, surprise and moonshine. Red girl of honey, size, surprise and moonshine. Stone Soul, Stone Soul. Come on, come on, let's hurry down to a stone. So picnic, Surry down to a stone.
So picnic, rain and sun come in a king. And from the sky come the Lord and the lightning. Stone Soul, Stone Soul, Surry on stone. Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry, there'll be trains of blossoms. There'll be trains of music. There'll be trains of dress, trains of golden bus. Come along and hurry on, sweet trains. I've learned Surry, I've done. Can you Surry, can you Surry?
Surry down to a stone. So picnic, Surry down to a stone. So picnic, there'll be lots of time in one eye. Red girl of honey, size, surprise and moonshine. Red girl of honey, size, surprise and moonshine. Stone Soul, yeah, Surry on stone. Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry, Surry.
Music from pianist Billy Child and friends, let us see on vocals and the Laura Nero ever, ever, ever green.
Stone Soul picnic here in our one of Friday Night Jazz on VPR. Stick around as you may know, there's a whole lot more to go. Hey, arrived. I've been recently enjoying the biography of bassist Ron Carter. And forgive me, I cannot remember the gentleman with whom he compiled this much needed, highly recommended work. But I wanted to feature some Ron Carter. You know, people think of Ron Carter who's played with darn near everybody. But people especially think about the work with the Miles Davis quintet. What many people consider the last great acoustic Miles Davis ensemble. However, what we'll listen to tonight, music featuring two members of that ensemble, starting with a collection called Third Plane, Ron Carter on bass, Mr. Herbie Hancock on piano, Tony Williams on drums, this piece written by Tony Williams. It's called Laura L.A.W. R.A.
Bassist Ron Carter from a 1978 CD entitled Third Plane, Ron Carter bass, Herbie Hancock
piano, Tony Williams on drums, and a composition by a very, very underrated writer. I believe incredible drummer, born in Chicago, moved to Boston as a young and joined the Miles Davis quintet when he was 17. And he was all that, which is a D.C. Son, Tony Williams is all that. The piece Laura. Next, new music by a pianist, band leader, composer, educator, great, great, great guy, Mr. Jason Moran. He's also joined by the likes of bassist vocalist Michelle Indegay Ocello on this particular collection. It's called All Rise, a joyful elegy for it. I think one of the, you know, clearly one of the greats of music, certainly of the music refer to as jazz. Mr. Thomas
Fats Waller, what we'll listen to is the standard Lulu's Back in Town. Never know how much I care when you put your arms around me. I get a fever that's hard to bear.
When you kiss me fever when you hold me tight, fever in the morning, fever all through the night. When you kiss me fever when you hold me tight, fever in the morning, fever all through the night. When you kiss me fever when you hold me tight, fever in the morning, fever all through the night. When you kiss me fever when you hold me tight, fever in the morning, fever all through the night. Everybody's got the fever, this is something you should know. Viva is such a new thing, Viva started long ago. Roll me all out, Juliet. Juliet felt the same.
When he put his arms around her, he said, Julie, baby, you, my plane, now give me fever. When we kiss me fever that's flaming you, Viva, I won't fire, Viva, I'll burn for you. Captain Smith and Pocahontas, how'd it bear a man affair? When a daddy tried to kill him, she said, Daddy, don't you dare.
With his kisses fever when he holds me tight, fever, I miss Mrs. Daddy won't you treat him right. Now you listen to my story, here's the point that I have made. Chicks were born to give you fever. Be it fair or sense a game to give you fever. When they kiss him, fever, if you're really learning, Viva, I'm a fire, what a lovely way to burn. What a lovely way to burn. What a lovely way to burn. I heard a two song set here in the first hour of tonight's show, concluded with a Vermont treasure, vocalist Audrey Bernstein from Audrey Bernstein Loves Blue.
Audrey's working on a new collection which we anxiously await until then we'll just have to settle for this really good collection. What we heard, Audrey Bernstein and friends performing fever, first done by Little Willie John, then by Peggy Lee, just in case you get on Jeopardy and ask you that question. Before that, from all rise, a joyful, elegy for Fats Waller, new from Jason Moran and Lulu's back in town. Today we have tonight's show music from Joe Sample, Bill Withers, John Coltrane and others on Lister supported Vermont Public Radio.
