. . . . . . Well, hello there. Welcome to another edition of Friday Night Jazz on Vermont Public Radio. I'm Rubin Jackson, your host. Happy Friday. Thank you for tuning in. Two days before Valentine's Day. Happy early Valentine's Day if you are so inclined. We will be here as always from now until 11 o'clock. Friday Night Jazz on VPR is made possible by Ellis Music of Bethel Vermont,
specializing in sales, service, and rental of musical instruments to schools and individuals throughout New England. Beginning tonight's show by special request, band leader, organist, pianist, composer, arranger, native of Oakland, California. Born Carla Borg, known as Carla Blay, from Heavy Heart on the ECM label. This came out goodness gracious. Back in 1984, just as fresh as it was then. We heard the opening movement from Heavy Heart, which is called Light or Dark. This is to begin another edition of Friday Night Jazz on VPR Stick Around. A couple of new-ish, very recent releases up next. Starting with Trumbonist Robin U-Banks. I almost call them Robin Williams, the comedian, but they're both brilliant, brilliant people. Robin U-Banks, the mass-line big band. This taken for more than meets the ear. Again, a late fall early winter 2015 release.
What we'll hear is an original by Mr. U-Banks entitled Metronome. This is one of the most popular songs in the world. This is a song by Mr. U-Banks. This is a song by Mr. U-Banks. This is a song by Mr. U-Banks. This song by Mr. L가지man. This is a free version.

. Mr. Robin U-Banks and his mass-line big band here just moments into hour one of Friday night jazz on Vermont public radio with Ruben Jackson. And again, the collection is entitled more than meets the ear and we heard the original metronome. We're going back as promised to another recent release. This is entitled Detroit Jazz City on the blue note label. And as I've said before, you know, just think of a few, just a few great musicians from the Detroit area. Alice Coltrane, Betty Carter, Paul Chambers, Donald Bird, oh my goodness, Marcus Belgrave, to whom this collection is dedicated. What we'll hear tonight, this featuring someone born in Detroit, Michigan, grew up in Pennsylvania, got a two requests for this. And I thought, you know, great excuse to play something very fine.
At least I hope you feel that way also. Vocalist Sheila Jordan and Sheila Blues. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah, yeah. Mmm, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, ya. While I was born in Detroit, Michigan, back in 19, I have a senior moment, born. In Detroit, Michigan, November the 18th, 19, Mickey Mouse's birthday, same day, same year, same month.
But my mother, she was only 16 years old and she couldn't raise me. So she sent me to live with my grandparents and a small coal mine in town in Pennsylvania State. I grew up with the coal miners, singing in the fear that I'd never say had a day night. The miners just sit around and drink their beer and whiskey and sing their songs. You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. But rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely, rarely. Did they ever fight?
Move back to Detroit When I was about 14 Hangin' down at the club suitcase Well, that was everybody's scene You didn't have to be 21 years old to get in there Cause it was just a place for kids to play and sing Oh yeah Well, we were always chasing Charlie Parker I think he wrote that song for us Chasing the bird, chasing the bird, chasing the bird When he used to play at the club else scene Oh, where you had to be 21 years old to get in
I porch to my mother's birth certificate Where I had with a bell dyed my hair blonde High-heeled shoes that were killing my feet Smoking my lucky strike cigarettes, unfiltered I was gonna give the door To use the bird, but the man said, hey, little white girl You better go home, don't do your homework So I went around in the alley And I was sittin' on the garbage cans Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby And he opened up the door And he played his heart out for me What a treat, what a treat, what a treat, what a treat To your bird play, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I porch to my mother's birth certificate Where I had with a bell dyed my hair blonde High-heeled shoes that were killing my feet Smoking my lucky strike cigarettes, unfiltered I was sittin' on the garbage cans Nasty gotta down Stopra! Stopra!
Stopra! Stopra! Stopra! Stopra...... Stopra! Stopra! Stopra! Stopra! Stopra! It wasn't for jazz music, I wouldn't be alive today, oh no, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, no, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Beep off records, I mean the 78 ones, and all because I heard Charlie Parker and got
to sing with Skeeter and Mitch all those many years ago. I wouldn't be up here at 83 and a half years old, and I want to think Don was for making my day as Clint Eastwood would say. Ms. Sheila Jordan from Detroit Jazz City here just moments into another edition of Friday Night Jazz on Vermont Public Radio with Rubin Jackson, Sheila Jordan and Sheila's Blues. Next another recent collection which gained a lot of critical praise in the fall of 2015,
vocalist Charney Wade offerings, the title of the collection, the music of Gil Scott Heron and Brian Jackson. We'll start with the title track which was heard on midnight, the first minute of a new day, the first collection done by Gil Scott Heron and Brian Jackson on the aristolabel. If you think about big record labels, aristob, put together by Clive Davis, Whitney Houston, a huge seller for them at that time, pretty risky business to, you know, get a, you know, a musical spoken word ensemble with a decidedly political slash social event on a major label, but Clive Davis did that and we had as a result collections like Midnight, the first minute of a new day from South Africa to South Carolina, et cetera, again, Charney Wade from offering here an hour one of Friday Night Jazz on VPR. Something to offer you, we hate, music to offer you, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit,
spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, spirit, I'll say it. The seasons may change and feelings may change. But music remains.
And it will. Seasons may change. Feelings may change. But music remains. Feelings may change. Feelings may change. Feelings may change. Feelings may change. Something to offer you. Feelings may change. Feelings may change. Use that to offer you. And spirit to offer you. And spirit to offer you.
