Description
Episode Description
"Now in its fifth year, the Chicago Matters project, a collaborative effort of WTTW, The Chicago Community Trust, and WBEZ radio, grapples with a hot topic that is on the minds of people everywhere--violence. The four programs in the series all address a different aspect of violence, concentrating on rehabilitation, understanding and weapon control. The documentary DREAD, profiles the life of Leon Dread, a former felon, and explores his journey of rehabilitation to personal accountability and productivity. After 45 years of taking from the community, he is earnestly trying to give something back..."--excerpt from 1994 Peabody Awards entry form. Leon Dread discusses his life from his youth in Gary, Indiana (child of an addict with several children), to his forced service in Vietnam, through his adult life in and out of jail, to his present life as a drug-free husband and parent. Interviewees include two of his crime victims, an officer who arrested him, the judge who got him into the drug rehabilitation program, several members of the Cook County, Illinois penal system, doctors, counselors, and other members of the drug program.
