- Description
- Episode Description
- "This entry is drawn from Oregon Public Broadcasting's coverage of the state's doctor-assisted suicide law. It includes a sound portrait, pieces on the first patient to take her life under the law and on her doctor, coverage of state guidelines for using the law and an in-depth report on a cancer patient who lobbied for the law but died before being able to take the lethal prescription. "We believe our entry merits consideration for a Peabody Award because it continues our in-depth coverage of the first law in the United States on an issue that is highly controversial and of fundamental importance: is life important for its own sake or is quality of life crucial' "Throughout the year, we broadcast a number of extensive, complex stories on how the law was working, who was using it, how doctors felt about it, whether legislators would change it and how the debate in congress affected how the law was being carried out. OPB broke the story on the first patient to use the law and obtained the first interview with her doctor. Our reporting was of the highest quality ? fair, factual, balanced and sensitive."--1998 Peabody Awards entry form.
