<v Tom Clark>Long ago, Frances Thompson penned the essence of my teaching career <v Tom Clark>when he wrote Know You What it is to be a Child. <v Tom Clark>It is to believe in love and to believe in loveliness, <v Tom Clark>to believe in belief. <v Tom Clark>I humbly accept this award with deep gratitude for the support of staff <v Tom Clark>and administration at Shiloh Park School. <v Tom Clark>To my wonderful family, Ruth Marley, Jessie and Mom. <v Tom Clark>I love you. And especially to the more than 700 kindergarten <v Tom Clark>children in Zion who were willing to share a little bit of their lives <v Tom Clark>with me. I have been blessed. <v Marty Robinson>And now the founder of the Golden Apple Foundation, Martin J. <v Marty Robinson>Koldyke. <v Martin J. Koldyke>This was the year that we watched the war on CNN.
<v Martin J. Koldyke>The year we said our men and women and our incredibly sophisticated war machinery <v Martin J. Koldyke>to protect the Saudi oil fields and free Kuwait, Desert Storm <v Martin J. Koldyke>demonstrated the will and the power of an America aroused and focused. <v Martin J. Koldyke>Now, as the yellow ribbons are untied and the parades dwindle <v Martin J. Koldyke>down, can this rediscovered energy be mobilised for a far <v Martin J. Koldyke>more important campaign? <v Martin J. Koldyke>Let's call it brainstorm. <v Martin J. Koldyke>We ask this president and this U.S. <v Martin J. Koldyke>Congress to summon the political courage and the will to enact an energy <v Martin J. Koldyke>bill, a surcharge targeted solely for education and the infrastructure <v Martin J. Koldyke>to provide to the states. The money so school districts can compete for talent <v Martin J. Koldyke>and pay teachers what they're worth. <v Martin J. Koldyke>Shouldn't a Golden Apple teacher with 20 years experience make as much as a beginning <v Martin J. Koldyke>lawyer in Chicago or Los Angeles?
<v Martin J. Koldyke>We ask the more enlightened and progressive leaders of the teachers unions <v Martin J. Koldyke>to push for school districts being able to pay merit compensation <v Martin J. Koldyke>to the gifted and accomplished teachers among us, like business and the professions. <v Martin J. Koldyke>School systems should have money available to offer early retirement <v Martin J. Koldyke>on a one shot basis to those teachers who are tired <v Martin J. Koldyke>and who are doing it only for the money or the pension and replace <v Martin J. Koldyke>them with energetic, highly motivated men and women. <v Martin J. Koldyke>To the Golden Apple class of ninety one, we say welcome, <v Martin J. Koldyke>you join 50 distinguished predecessors in the Golden Apple Academy, <v Martin J. Koldyke>you are needed in the ranks of those who choose to seek constructive <v Martin J. Koldyke>change. We thank Maggie Daley and Dr. Lee <v Martin J. Koldyke>on Letterman for their ongoing commitment to excellence in teaching. <v Martin J. Koldyke>Thanks to our partner WTW, Channel Eleven for being a creative
<v Martin J. Koldyke>and daring partner, the great teachers everywhere. <v Martin J. Koldyke>Please understand one more time how much we <v Martin J. Koldyke>treasure you and your profession of teaching. <v Martin J. Koldyke>Thank you. <v Speaker>And we thank you, Mike. <v Speaker>Tonight, you met 10 outstanding educators who have nurtured and enlightened hundreds of <v Speaker>our children. And we have done our best to encourage them as they continue <v Speaker>their profoundly important work. <v Speaker>We hope that you will do the same. <v Speaker>Goodnight. <v Announcer>If you know a terrific high school teacher that you would like to nominate for the 1992
<v Announcer>Golden Apple Awards called the Golden Apple Foundation at 3 1 2 <v Announcer>4 0 7 0 0 0 6. <v IBM Narrator>Where do you find IBM in Chicagoland education? <v IBM Narrator>Everywhere. In preschool programs through United Way grants. <v IBM Narrator>Helping grade school students learn the value of staying in school. <v IBM Narrator>Teaching job skills at IBM adult learning centers, job Training Centers and the Adopt <v IBM Narrator>a school program. Helping create model schools in the city and a leading edge project <v IBM Narrator>linking school and home in several school districts. <v IBM Narrator>And now IBM is helping support the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence and Teaching. <v IBM Narrator>IBM is there.
