Description
Program Description
"Seeing the approach of the 30th anniversary of Ruth Page's first version of 'The Merry Widow,' WTTW/Chicago taped a major television production in their Chicago studios. THE MERRY WIDOW has been called one of the most ambitious independent dance presentations for American television. Staged for Ruth Page by Larry Long, the production boats a score played by musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and a stellar cast headed by Patricia McBride and Peter Martins (in one of his final performances before retirement); Rebecca Wright, George De La Pena, Larry Long, Warren Conover, and a company including dancers who appear through the courtesy of the New York City Ballet. "'Certainly, Ruth Page played a major role in the establishment of a native ballet tradition in a country with no native ballet tradition,' wrote New York Times dance critic Anna Kisselgoff, and John Martin, in his book on her life, wrote, 'She has amassed an enormous amount of career since her debut with Pavlova and there are no indications whatever but that she will go right on amassing more. She has been, indeed, one of the real pioneers of American ballet.' "Now 83 years old, it has been noted that 'most of Miss Page's ballets will die with her (because) only a mere half dozen or so of her ballets have been filmed or videotaped.' WTTW's MERRY WIDOW serves as a lasting tribute to this American choreographer, and as grand entertainment as well."--1983 Peabody Award entry form.
