Description
Episode Description
"Fiddlers Three epitomizes the range and diversity SOUNDSTAGE has become famous for. In keeping with the theme format of the series, Fiddlers Three brings together three of the foremost violin virtuosos playing today. The individual performances by Jean-Luc Ponty, Itzhak Perlman and Doug Kershaw reflect as wide a range of violin styles as has ever been heard in an hour of television. Ponty represents a fusion of jazz and rock music distinguished by extremely effective melodic invention and clear-headed improvisation. Perlman plays two well-known classical pieces (The Caprice Viennois and Carmen Fantasie) to demonstrate his incomparable skills. And Kershaw, with a brand of music rooted in two traditions of the American South (Louisiana [Cajun] and straight country-western) concludes with an electrifying performance that is exemplary of a third tradition: the exuberant showmanship perennially associated with country music. "The meeting ground for the three is created in the concluding piece by Ponty, written especially for the program. It allows the violinists to come together through the sheer joy of making music with fellow masters of the instrument. Each retains his identity, however, through specially structured improvisational segments."--1977 Peabody Awards entry form.
