Description
Episode Description
The show focuses on a Hispanic neighborhood in the city and the kids who live there, and it features dialogue in both English and Spanish. The episode begins with Dona Rosario fitting Emily in her Quinceanera dress, and she explains what happens during a Quinceanera. Dona Rosario reveals that she never celebrated her Quinceanera, and she stresses the importance of tradition. Emily doesn't want a traditional Quinceanera, and she's frustrated that Dona Rosario didn't listen to her wishes. Dona Rosario picks a stranger for Emily's escort, but Emily already asked Garven to be her escort, and Dona Rosario is angry when she finds out. Emily lashes out at her and refuses to go through with the party. Some of the other kids and Johnny talk about what tradition means to them, and they convince Dona Rosario to make some changes to tradition. Dona Rosario apologizes to Emily, and they plan the Quinceanera together. At the Quinceanera, Emily dances with Garven and the party is a success.
Series Description
"The SONRISAS youngsters learn that people of different generations can regard their culture in different ways, when the plans for Emily's Quinceanera (her fifteenth birthday) turn into a disaster. The conscientious Madrina (Godmother), Dona Rosario, who missed having her own Quinceanera party, is determined that Emily will have everything just the way Dona Rosario wanted it to be for herself. Instead of being delighted over the dress Dona Rosario is making for her, the escort she has chosen, and the party arrangements that are in strict accordance with tradition, Emily is unhappy, angry, and rebellious because 'this old-fashioned stuff' is being forced on her, and her own wishes are being [ignored]. Only when traditional and contemporary lifestyles both bend a little does the Quinceanera party become a successful celebration."--1979 Peabody Awards entry form.
