"In 1953, the U.S. Army secretly sprayed thousands of Americans, including children at a school in Minneapolis'with toxic chemicals. An exclusive report by Melody Gilbert reveals that the Army lied about the aerosol releases in the Twin Cities, which were actually part of the Cold War biological warfare program. Gilbert interviews former students and finds that many had serious medical problems, including high rates of cancer, multiple miscarriages and children with birth defects. "After the story aired, Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone demanded the Army release all documents pertaining to spraying. National and international media picked up the story, and the Pentagon later released documents that revealed that similar sprayings took place in more than 200 cities across the country and in Canada. Just three months after the story aired, Congress approved spending $1 million to study the effects of the spraying nationwide."--1994 Peabody Awards entry form.
