Series Description
"Most of what we talk about every day, most of what we see about the world every day is filtered through media -- Being an educated individual means being aware of how your environment gets created. And the media are such an important part of that environment, I can't imagine someone not wanting to know how the media world gets created. -- Professor Joseph Turow, Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania "MediaWaves': An Introduction to Mass Communication is a college telecourse comprised of 26 half-hour television programs and a textbook, study guide, faculty support materials, supplementary CD-ROM and website. "We believe that MediaWaves': An Introduction to Mass Communication merits Peabody consideration because it offers an engaging and critical look at how the media world is created as seen from the unique perspectives of a wide range of people whose lives have been spent studying or operating within the world of media. Included are Walter Cronkite, Roger Ebert, Ben Bradlee, curators of the Smithsonian Institution, top scholars from major universities and many more. The programs interweave these experts with both original behind-the-scenes footage and rare historical film. "The following sample programs from the series/telecourse have been submitted for consideration: #108 -Recording History, #117 - Television News, and #125 - Media Convergence."--1997 Peabody Awards entry form.
