Description
Series Description
"Animated Women is a series of four half-hour programs showcasing the unique talents of four award-winning animators and independent artists: Faith Hubley, Joanna Priestley, Ruth Peyser and Lynn Smith. Each of the programs focuses on the work of one of the individual filmmakers, emphasizing personal style, thematic concerns process and method, attempting to communicate the wide-ranging artistic potential of both independent filmmaking and animation. The first program, 'Faith Hubley: Inspiration,' explores Hubley's sources of artistic inspiration in mythology, artifacts, and whimsy in Tall-Time Tales and Cloudland. 'Joanna Priestly: Point-of-View,' examines the self-exploration, humor and strong feminist consciousness that characterize Priestley's richly varied animation in Voices, All My Relations, and Grown-Up. The third program, 'Ruth Peyser: Mood,' explores the dark, strident and distinctly political worlds expressed in Another Great Day, Covered in Fleas, and Go To Hell! And the fourth program, 'Lynn Smith: Method,' looks at the exceptional story-telling collage work of Pearl's Diner and the meticulous under-the-camera work of Sandburg's Arithmetic. Unlike more traditional documentaries about filmmaking, which tend to use only film clips as illustrations, these programs showcase complete works by each of the artists in a context that is intended to assist viewers in 'reading' those works and in appreciating the art of the animated film."--1994 Peabody Awards entry form.
