Description
Program Description
"On the eve of the Apollo 15 moon launch, this television special was first aired for children. It was the first television program to relate the exploration of outer space to the inner world of children, to their questions, their interests, their needs. In it, Fred Rogers interviews astronaut Maj. Alfred M. Worden, asking the children's own questions about how astronauts feel when they fly to the moon, what they eat, what they wear. "Astronaut Wordon answers their questions with a simple directness that reveals his concern and his empathy for children. It was in fact he who initiated the program with an invitation to Fred Rogers to visit the Cape Kennedy Space Center and interpret the news event to children. "That a space explorer and a children's television pioneer both care about sharing a historical space event with the nation's children, via television, is a significant milestone in children's television programming."--1971 Peabody Awards entry form. Opens with video clips of children asking questions about astronauts and space travel. Then Mr. Rodgers meets with Major Worden in the launch room of the Kennedy Space Center and asks him questions that children have submitted. Also includes recorded footage of astronauts and space missions.
