"'THE WORLD OF JOHN HAMMOND' is a three-hour musical tribute to the dean of American record producers, divided into two 90 minute programs, distributed as special programs outside of the SOUNDSTAGE series on PBS. "Featuring such artists as Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, Bob Dylan, Red Norvo, Helen Humes, Sonny Terry and others, its intent is to guide the viewer along a 45-year history of popular music, as seen through the eyes of the single individual who has been credited with influencing it the most over that time span, John Hammond. "In addition to live performances by all of the above, the special program features film sequences of two of Hammond's most well-known performers, the late blues singer Bessie Smith, and Billie Holliday. "While more than 90 minutes of the program features musical performance, nearly half of the program deals with conversation about musicians and music, providing an insight rarely, if ever, seen on television, into the history of the American musical experience. "The Executive Producer of 'THE WORLD OF JOHN HAMMOND' is Kenneth Ehrlich. David Erdman is Producer/Director. The Associate Producer is Eliot Wald."--1975 Peabody entry form.
