Description
Program Description
"10 Things Every Child Needs explores ways parents and caregivers can enhance a child's brain development. Its roadmap, the 10 essential things children need, can help ensure that children will reach their full potential and become thriving adults. Cutting-edge research and comments from early childhood development experts, including T. Berry Brazelton, Bruce Perry, J. Felton Earls, Irving Harris, April Benasich, and Barbara Bowman, all contribute to the presentation. "Dr. Bruce Perry, a neurobiologist and child development expert from Baylor College of Medicine uses 6-year-old twins to illustrate how maternal interaction influences development. In another segment, Dr. J. Felton Earls, principal investigator for the Project on Human Development in Chicago, explains the effects of stress on a child's development and talks about how children rely on caregivers as 'social buffers' in the presence of alarming social situations. "The '10 Things' which dramatically improve a child's ability to learn are: Interaction; Touch; Stable Relationships; Safe, Healthy Environments; Self-Esteem; Quality Care; Play; Communication; Music; and Reading. Hosted by Tim Reid, actor and star of the WB's sitcom, 'Sister, Sister.'"--1997 Peabody Awards entry form.
