Description
Series Description
"Wonderwise is a series of five (5) educational science kits featuring women in science. The kits are designed for 4th-6th grade students, and each kit focuses on one science topic and one scientist. Wonderwise uses multiple technologies: video profiles of the scientist, written biographies of the scientist, classroom activities, and CD-ROMs. Each kit combines hands-on science activities with personal insights from the scientist. The concept is for students to observe science the way the scientist does. The project involves the scientists in every phase of the project design. Project directors also sought teacher input to ensure that the science topics would fit in with their curricula. Statewide teacher training has also been a crucial factor in the success of the kits, and every Educational Service Unit in Nebraska received complimentary Wonderwise kits. "The strength of Wonderwise is that each technology reinforces another technology. The biography is a literature assignment as well as a science lesson. The science activities incorporate data collection, math skills, deduction, and creativity. The CD-ROMs are resource guides. Wonderwise allows literature, science and math teachers to work together. "Wonderwise merits Peabody consideration because it effectively integrates multiple communication technologies for the purpose of furthering science literacy. The key issue is that the lessons of the Wonderwise kits must be understandable to elementary students and teachers. Every kit component has been classroom tested and modified as a result of the evaluation. Feedback is essential. If the teachers and their students don't understand the concept, or lose interest in it, science education does not take place. Science is not knowing about the world'it's being curious about it. That's what Wonderwise is all about."--1997 Peabody Awards entry form.
