- This is a full episode of the series. Jim Lehrer anchors. John Tackett and Mike Ritchey report on a garbage dump in West Dallas. Richey interviewed current neighborhood resident Melvin Brown and former resident S.M. Edwards; both men complain of a serious rat infestation. Property owner Thomas Wheeler denies ever hearing complaints. Wheeler leases the property to the junkyard operator. Ron DeVillier reports on the case of Lee Harris, a mentally handicapped foster child who had been kept in a cage. The State Department of Public Welfare issued a new directive to audit all foster homes in Texas. Greg Roberson reports on the possibility of the return of passenger rail to Dallas; footage of the abandoned Union Station is shown. Darwin Payne reports on the level of press coverage given to the Dallas debutante season. Lee Clark explains the debutante system. This is followed by "Afternoon with Alinda," a video essay profile of Alinda Hill, daughter of Al Hill and granddaughter of billionaire H.L. Hunt. She is one of Dallas' 12 debutantes in 1970. Lee Clark discusses the Black debutante system in Dallas. She interviews Cleveland Amory, author of "Who Killed Society" about the future of the debutante system. Next is a segment with music and photos from the Black debutante ball. Lehrer reports on George H.W. Bush being named as Nixon's ambassador to the United Nations. A recent interview with Bush is shown. Bush says he may have reached a dead-end in elective politics. Lehrer reads call-in viewer responses to the stories aired in this episode. A musical segment with Christmas music and footage of children at Nieman's North Park watching a toy train is shown.
